Both of my brake lights went out at the same time

Do you think it is a fuse and if so where is the fuse box located for the brake lights?

Thanks idealdetail, where is the fuse box located that controls the brake lights and how would I be able to tell if it was the switch?

I Just had the same problem. I found that the bulb socket was inserted in such a way as to cause a short which blows fuse 46 when you press the brake pedal. I also had some bulbs which didn't fit properly. I hope this helps someone out. Also when Fuse 46 blows, you can't start the car till you replace the fuse.

For those of you who don't know where the fuse panel is its on the left "driver's side of American BMW's under the hood nearest the windshield cover by a rectangular black plastic box. It snaps open from the front side.

I took out the whole light assembly and cleaned it and replace all the mismatched bulbs with the correct ones, to be sure I fixed my problem for good. Check control now reads "ok"

All this refers to when you press the pedal all the brake lights stop working and you control center says brake circuit failure.

You can check the fuses if they are ok i would check the brake switch next as i would expect this to be an issue if both went out at the same time.

the fusebox should be under the hood on the drivers side firewall. I'm not sure on the exact fuse number but when you remove the lid of the fusebox it should have a label underneath it to tell you which fuse is which.

To test the brake switch i would use a voltage tester and run it across the pins on top of the brake switch, it should have on 12v feed when pedal is not pressed and two when it is. The brake switch is located on the pedal assembly right above the brake pedal. if you can't get to the brake switch and all the fuses seem ok goto the tail lights and remove the brake bulbs and test for current there in the bulb holder center pin.

SOURCE: brake lights don't come on. checked fuse box,

look up above your brake pedal and you will see the switch.. It will either between the firewall and the pedal arm (switch moves in when you brake).. Or it will be between the pedal arm and the dash (switch moves out when you brake)

The brakes lights don't work. can't tell which fuse to replace, manual does not explain well enough

You have a high mount brake light. Press the brake pedal. If it doesn't come on, replace the brake switch at the brake pedal. If it does come on and the tail lights don't, replace the turn signal switch.

Eric,
Does the break light on the top of the cab work? If so the fuse and stop lamp relay are ok.
If not the 10 amp fuse in fuse box (JB) maybe open # 20 Stop Lamp passenger side panel . If it is good there is a stop lamp relay (E12) in fuse box under hood from the manual it is the second one in from the left by the battery. Also there is a(VDC) Control Unit (E125) can't find where in the manual it is located.
You would think that the power from the battery , fuse switch to lights not, that is why I got the complete manual for the truck. hard to under stand at times.

2006 pontiac vibe brake light

All the lights stopping at the same time is not likely a fuse, it would be the brake light switch, the brake light switch is over the brake pedal near top of brake pedal arm under the dash. To test take a 12 volt test light ($5.00 at any auto parts store) and see if both side of the switch light the test light when the brake pedal is pushed, one side is hot with 12 volts without pushing the brake pedal down. The fuse location is in the owners manual but I am 99% sure that isn't the problem.

2001 chevy tracker ,what would cause the fuse for brake lights to blow? already tried unplugging wire harness to back of car at fuse block.

This all depends, if the fuse blows as soon as you put it in without stepping on the brake pedal then theres a dead short in the fuse box or the power wire going to the brake switch is shorting out, this 15amp fuse runs from the fuseox to brake light switch, so the short is between that but if it blow with brake pedal pushed then you said you dissconnect the rear brake light at fuse box and fuse still blows so the next step inwhich power is feed from this fuse is the following and you will need to unhook these components one at a time until short is gone. the next location is the the abs brake control module which is by the master cylinder area after that it goes to the cruise contorl servo also under the hood, then it goes to the shifter release solenoid which is very common problem, the wires melt or short out in that area, and next it goes to computer which i dont think is the problem and from there it feeds the rear lights and third brake light. hope this helps, good day.

Both break lights went out at the same time. Think it may be the fuse #15 wondering what else it could be. And, how hard is it to change the fuse? Do I need to disconnect battery?

Check if hi mount brake light works. if so ck bulbs.if not, ck fuse/ switch If switch was bad, I dont think you could get it out of park. Dont disconnect battery.

My brake lights went out on my 2006 cadillac cts. i checked the bulbs and the are fine. I located the fuse box under the back seat but have no clue which one to change.

If all the brake light went out at the same time, then i would look at the brake switch. this is located along the brake pedal somewhere. remove it and play with it and see if will get them going again. if you do get the lights to start working, replace the switch. good luck.

Brake lights won't come on!!

read your fuse box cover...itll tell you which fuse is which. could also be a fuselink in the rear that connects the two sides may be blown. thi is in the wiring under the truck, and would need to be cut out and a new one spliced in.

My brake lights just went out in my 2001 VW oassat could it be a fuse?

If both lights went out it could very well be the fuse, check the fuse box located below the dash and see if the fuse labeled taillight/brake light is blowen if so replace fuse and the lights should be working again.
