94 F150Engine Revs up and down at start up and when put into gear

Engine will crank fine then start to rev up and down until put into drive or reverse. Almost dies when put into drive or reverse...have to wait before pressing the gas, also seems to have even more trouble if the ac or heater is running whn shifting. Doesn't seem to have any problems after you drive it awhile. Seems when you first turn the key into the acc. position it has a popping sound that comes threw the speakers.

Its is a 1994 F150 with a 5.0 Auto

    I had recently changed sparks plugs and wires, so I knew they were good. Removed the ICV and cleaned it out with throttle body cleaner....took battery cables off and let it sit for around 20 minutes. Cleaned the small plastic vavle in the ICV housing and assured it moved back and forth. Initially it was very hard to start, I guess the computer was relearning how to idle etc....haven't had any trouble out of it since as far as idling goes, but it does seem to be running a tad rich...not sure why.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your post is descriptive:

  • Engine will crank fine then start to rev up and down until put into drive or reverse - idle hunting;
  • Almost dies when put into drive or reverse - idle too low;
  • have to wait before pressing the gas - idle hunting;
  • also seems to have even more trouble if the ac or heater is running whn shifting - additional load to an already troubled engine;
  • Doesn't seem to have any problems after you drive it awhile - engine has sufficiently warmed up;
  • Seems when you first turn the key into the acc. position it has a popping sound that comes threw the speakers - most likely relays engaging causing spikes.
Based on the above, recommended course of action would be:
  • have the computer scanned for error codes/logs;
  • temporary workaround may involve cleaning the intake side with special attention to the throttle position sensor and the MAF sensor;
  • of course all other checks would be to your advantage including electrical contacts, other sensors;
  • ultimately a tune-up with sensor check/cleaning/replacement might be your best bet.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Is it normal for the revs to stay up when changing gear in a 2002 4x4 3.0L turbo diesel navara?

do they revs drop off when taking pressure off accelerator pedal when out of gear? if only staying high during gear change it would suggest a worn clutch friction/pressure plate so the engine isn't slowing down when clutch is depressed .I'd also have the OBD codes read to see if there is a sensor/switch at fault , but sounds like the clutch to me

Do you have a check engine light on? If so you must get it tested for the fault code that is stored when the computer turns on this light.

You have internal transmission damage I expect the clutches on third and fourth gear are wiped out. Its either that or a solenoid gone bad that holds those clutches pressure get it in a transmission shop soon to avoid whole transmission replacement costs.

1995 cadilac deville has problem shifting from 1 to 2 gear

You don't have torque converter shudder. You don't even mention that in your original post! You def had a solenoid issue. My 94 STS did the same thing. I only had reverse, 1st and 2nd gear. Wouldn't shift outa 2nd period. It was a $200 solenoid repair. Car had a 160K on it when that happened. I have almost 170k on it now. Shifts and works fine. you don't need the tranny replaces ad josavv63 indicates.
