Question about 1988 Ford Escort EXP

1 Answer

1988 Ford Escort GL runs rich at idle

Our Escort 1.9L runs rich at idle when hot and cold. It runs ok at normal speeds. Is there an idle control switch/sensor and if so, where is it? How do we test it? Are we on the right track? What else could cause this problem?

Kevin - our idle speed is ok. It is the fuel mixture that is wrong. We have heavy black exhaust at idle. That is what we mean when we say the engine runs rich at idle. Thanks!

The idle is controlled by the car computer, it should be at 1000rpm in normal condition.

THE THROTTLE LEVER MAY NOT RETURN TO IDLE
POSITION DUE TO MISALIGNMENT OF THE AIR CONDITIONER SHUT OFF SWITCH TO
THE THROTTLE LEVER PIN. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: A JAMMED THROTTLE COULD
    RESULT FOR THE SAME.

    Black smoke
is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot
be burned completely. Another term for excess fuel is "running
rich." Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black
smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the
least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine
performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor.
How did the fuel get into the cylinder in
the first place? Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that
is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump
    , a leaky fuel injector, or a
faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present,
check the engine oil as in the white smoke example to make sure excess
fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw
fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil. Call your mechanic and
advise him of what you have found.

I hope this helps you determine what
could be causing your engine smoke, and the possible reasons behind the
    smoke.

1988 ford t-bird 302 why does it idle to fast when temp below 50

It's normally going to idle faster when cold, but you can change the idle speed down with a screwdriver at the throttle engine speed screw.

Gas pedal gets stuck and keeps the car going cant stop without turning the car off

dont drive it. find the cause and fix it now.
Hot and cold engine or BOTH>?
1995 Tracker, no tranny , no 4wd , on engine options stated.
Exact high RPM in neutral, not stated...... 1500 is normal cold.
keeps going in Neutral. (nah , you have 5 ways to stop any car.
key, hand brake, foot brake and neutral. and with 4wd, 1 more neutral.
keep that in mind driving any car.
this car has up to 3 throttle cables that can stick. and more!

1: floor mats hit the pedal>? ala. Toyota style (lawsuits)
2: the three cables are, throttle. , cruise and A/T transmission kick down cable. if car is M/T and no cruise it has 1 cable.
so disconnect it, throttle fixed? (disconn,. 1 by 1, bingo?

no cure?, then its not the pedal , you meant just high idle.
yes, replace the cable or bad parts three.
ok say its not the cables.. (tests proved that)
the 95 came with 2 engines, 8valves and 16valves,
they work differently (8v love so race, 16v loves to stall)

1: ISC Stuck open, common.
2: 8v, any air leaks at all , will cause super high idle speeds.
3: throttle valve in the throttle body is stuckopen (gunk) or the return spring broken (very very rare the latter,in fact never heard of one breaking)
4: IAC (thermal idle control stuck open ,(my 97 was). and lots more.
5: on the 16v it takes 2 failures. to make high idle.
gross rich running engine (cold engine its normal) and any air leak
once hot the engine can not race unless there is huge overfueling
and an air leak.
6: the 8v has this device on the side of the throttle body.
called a dash pot. its just a fast idle vacuum servo.
if stuck open the engine will scream full time....
7: ECU stuck in limphome, can cause too high idle speeds.

we need to know which engine
http://www.fixkick.com/find-parts.html
8v or 16v first.
then does the idle race hot or cold or both (engine temperatures)
if it races , then how fast?, RPM the dash tachometer tells you that.

it can be as simple as a 50cent hose cracked.
to a dead ISC. (idle speed control) IAC is thermal idle air controller.
the IAC must be closed on a hot engine,
if the the engine never gets hot,it will scream full time.

Increase then decrease idle when engine is cold especially

cold engine idle surge. (problem)
RPM range of surge not stated
300-700 or 800 to 1500? (range is critical to diagnosis)

bad fuel
running summer fuel in winter (running old fuel?)
needs a tune up bad, see the list in the operator guide.
idle speed controller, sticking or EGR valve same. (clean them)
location not stated, so cant guess about local air temps.?
no other symptoms, lack of engine power? etc?
was it ok last week, or better, when was the last time it was OK?
1week, 1year?
surge , causes, on a tuned engine might be:
1: too lean. so lean the ISC can not control idle. rpm low, stalling
2: too rich, flooding, stalling, spark plugs foul (look at them)
3: weak compression in 1 or more cylinders.
4: bad spark.
5: air leaks, in the plenum causing , ISC to lose control.
why high RPM?

especially?
well that means it fails hot too.
and there is a simple tests. for hot surge.
is engine fully hot? 180F and holds solid there?
say rpm is about 800
and you turn on head lights, heater fan and (not AC) and defrost.
the RPM must hold or the ISC is failing.
ISC -= idle speed controls. (all EFI has this function)

Randem rough idel and fuel/rich mix smell. Hot or cold ? Changed the water temp sensior for the eci and also new eci? 2001 Ford escort

I'm surprised you didn't get an error code, mainly on the spark plug wires. I would try those, they can cause a bunch of trouble, including rough idle, rich burning, everytime my Grand Marquis acted up, it was the spark plug wires. Of course it was also the only thing not covered in the warranty. Check it out.
