Question about 1996 Chevrolet Caprice Classic
Ed the pas light is stays on. took to a chev dealership they could not find anything, checked fuel system and battery. $144. later the car came home. they had no problem starting the car.
could it be the sensor on the keys?
If this was a no start, there a couple of things you may want to look for. First did this start when it got cold if so, I would down on the starter there are a bunch of wires that all hook to the positive thermal on the starter, I would take them off and clean each wire thermal with sand paper real good I have had them build up corrosion in between them and loose connection, if you jump the car it may run a few more days before it doesn’t start again. I have had to chase a bunch of cars from this, till I found out what was happen. Now its one of the first things I look for when nothing else stands out clear. I have also seen people put on a lot of part too because of this also look on the engine block for a ground bolt that GM sometimes likes to stack up wires on they can do the same thing.
Second there is a wire that goes down the steer column for the key switch they ware because of the movement of the key and the column it could have a bad spot in it or just about ready to break completely. This may cause both to happen or dash light to come on and a no start, You will need special tools to pull the steering wheel and take the column a part to check this.
