Question about 1984 Pontiac Fiero
Have a 1984 Pontiac Fiero, the other day the car turned over once and stopped. The lights on my dash dimmed and it seemed like my battery was dead. While trying to start it still i heard a crackling noise like an electrical short. Under my dash, the switch attatched to the clutch pedal was smoking. I detached the wires and tried to jump them to see if the switch was the problem. The same thing happened. I checked the wires attached to the starter and it turns out that one of the wires was grounded. I repositioned the wire and tried to start the car. This time it turned over for a split second but sounded like something was still shorting out. I checked all my power connections and cant find another short. But when i try to start the car it acts as if it would if the clutch pedal wasn't depressed, even though i have the wires jumped still.
Your battery may have reversed polarity. The same thing happened to me in my '94 GMC Sonoma. One crank and then nothing except my (+) battery terminal got so hot it almost caught fire. There is no way to test for reversed polarity and even on Autozone's test machine, they swore up and down my battery was good. They refused to warranty it, so I bought another battery. Once installed, my truck ran like a dream again. I took my battery to a different autozone and they warrantied it.
