Whatever you do , use the german manufactured power steering fluid till this issue is resolved... failure to do so could result in more problems than you want to get into.

I need to add some power steering fluid to the reservoir. I don't have any but I do have automatic transmission fluid. Can I use that?

Hi,
I would not recommend adding transmission fluid in your power steering pump.
Years ago one could get away with it.
If you do not have a Audi dealer near by,
Parts houses have a universal power steering fluid for sale.

Where does the power steering fluid go in a audi a4 1996 1.6 petrol and where does the brake fluid go cheers

the brake fluid reservoir is on the bulkhead at the bottom of the screen(i think cap colour yellow) and the power steering fluid goes into the cap marked pas(cap colour black)located at the side of the engine at the front of the engine bay.

Can you tell me why my volvo 850 t5 estate the steering is very heavy, plenty of steering fluid? sudenly becomes heavy, will then go back to normal then heavy again.

sounds like your power steering is failing, get it checked at a garage asap, steering is important when going fast :), probably needs steering wheel taken apart and power steering components checked for wear/damage.

1996 Audi A4. On a very cold morning the power steering fluid overflows from the resevoir.

Check up the hydraulic power steering pump.
See picture below for 1.6, 1.8 liters Audi (4 cyl.) engines:

If you find leaks and noise when runing, the hydraulic vane type pump is damaged. The pump **** air inside and mix air with oil resulting foam. Therefore fluid volume inside steering instalation rises. Then pressure overflows oil from the reservoir. You need repair or replace hydraulic vane type steering pump.

Can any one tell me the corect oil for power stering on my 1996 a4

Brian,

Power Steering fluid is what's needed. not oil. The fluid is generic, no special mix for a certain make or model.

I couldn't recommend one over another because of anything special it does. There is no Deluxe Power Steering Fluid that will help you steer twice as good as the leading competitor.

Have a good one Brian

Power steering went out on 1996 ford ranger what is problem?

The problem could be anything from a power steering hose has leaked out all the power steering fluid or the steering rack could be leaking fluid. Has the car made any strange noises when turning the steering wheel? A car that is loosing power steering fluid will at some point lose so much fluid as to make the power steering pump cavitate (starve for fluid) and the pump will make a high pitched noise when it has too little fluid in it. I can't remember if the 1996 ranger had only one belt on the engine or if the power steering has it own seperate belt. The belt being gone would prevent the power steering from working but if you only have one belt the car would also overheat.

Power steering whines

Check the fluid level and add as much as is appropriate. Keep in mind that you must use Audi/VW power steering fluid, as it's a proprietary mixture and use of "normal" fluid will ruin the steering rack (that'll run you over a grand to replace). Do this soon - extended periods of running with low PS fluid will burn up the pump.

Power Steering Fluid Leak, boiling fluid.

Look at the steering rack on the side of the car that you think the leak is, look for the steering rack boot or gaiter, it looks like a black circular accordian type thing.
If this is bulging and leaking fluid the seal in the end of the rack is gone, this is one of the most common faults of leaking fluid and at the rate you are losing fluid, the leak is on the pressurised side of the system after the pump (the seal at the end of the rack)
