Question about 1990 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

1990 pontiac firebird wont start

Ok i just got this car last sunday. it ran fine,
bad thing was its been sittin for a year, exp. tabs and is due for emissions test. so ive been running it five minutes a day as it spits carbon out lol,
one time while reving it i guess it clogged and it wud not idle and died. it then would not restart for 10 minutes, once it did it would not idle. later on in the night it was rough but eventually idled very smoothly.
i can not drive until this monday when i get my license.
today it was scheduled for a tune up so my mother was going to drive it.
withtin 30 seconds fo starting it she reved it.... now i wish i broke the law and drove it there.... it now will not start. jumpstart does nothing. when u turn the ignition, it makes the sound that it normally makes when it starts (only difference is, now thats the only sound it makes, instead of makin it for .5 seconds and starting, it just makes the noise non stop) it did this this morning, over 14 hours ago, still will not start.
co workers said u can find a repair manual online, i cant find any for free, this is my first car so i dont kno too much lol. im not completely stupid im not a blonde woman ( not seriously i know blondes kno cars too) im jus an 18 year old dude whos never worked on a car. PLEASE HELP!!! i cant get this thing to the tune up unless it starts!
o and fyi its a great car and ran perfect when i got it, it just needs cleaning after the first few minutes of running the exhaust is fine theres just build up inside somewhere its not like the car from transformers lol

ok i dont have tools neighbor does, and actually knows how to do it properly i see the spark plugs dont kno how to take em out looks like its in a case, its too dirty and way to cold out to work on it thanksgiving day so ya will have his help sunday. ive taken apart and replaced a fuel filter on a suv once, if its in same spot on this car its gunna be hard to get to considering its 6 inches of the ground rofl. anyways i will be looking into that, if i ca change those 2 parts i can save prolly have the labor on a tune up rofl. anyways ya will get that stuff fixed soon, the middle sparkplug when i took cap off had corrosion on it like a battery terminal so thats definately one of the issues and the gas filter is pretty reasonable so it will be swapped thanks country. any more advice anyone? or does anyone kno where i can find a free service manual? i got bucks for parts not for books and dont wanna wait for delivery anyways id rather tow it into a shop for that price

Sounds almost like my 90 Firebird. It quit running the day after I bought it. First replaced the plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, fuel filter, and air filter. Rotor fell apart as ti was being rmoved. This got the car back to idling. I bought a Shop Manual and a Code reader. Using these. replaced the fuel pump (old one below specs), oxygen sensor, injectors. Now it was running but periodically speedometer would drop and engine would buck with no codes. Took it to a good mechanic and he finally determined by eliminating all other problem sources that the ECM was bad. As of today I've added 180 miles with absolutely no problems. Good Luck!

Because the car was sitting for a year, you most likely have a problem with the gas going bad. After attempting to start, remove one spark plug, check to see if the tip is wet with fuel. If not, it could be the fuel filter is plugged up. This is something that should be replaced anyway, since the car sat for so long. Good luck w/ your 'bird!

Check out eautorepair website. You can purchase access to repair info for a car for 1 week $11.99, up to one year $29.99. It's a car repair manual on your computer, don't have to wait to have it delivered. It can be a bit technical, but would be a big help to you. You'll save way more than that fixing some stuff yourself, so it's worth the investment, and u can print out info u need to bring outside to the car. To make sure I understand what's going on, when u turn the key, the engine turns over, and it won't start now. Just turns over? Keep me posted as to how u do this weekend, I can help out more when u have more info on what u find then.

My emissions light is on when I first started kinda shaky last night I noticed little smoke under hood would it be OK to drive an please someone tell me what this could he

The emission light comes on when the computer detects a leak or malfunctioning part in the system. It can come on due to a loose gas cap to a disconnected hose. There a lot of things that make this light come on. IS the check engine light on/flashing? If so, you may have a misfire causing the shake. If the engine light is on, have the codes scanned to isolate the problem.

Could this be the battery?

This is a bad earth connection . Run a new cable from the battery to the engine or transmission , then run a cable from the engine or transmission to the body . No more trouble.

My 1993 honda accord sputters when accelerating

If you can't answer when the last time you changed the fuel filter it might not be a bad idea to change it. It could also be a vacuum leak as older cars ran on vacuum controls for emissions and things like that. listen for a possible whistle when accelerating or air being sucked in like a vacuum cleaner. Could also be a bad map sensor, or O2 sensor.

I have a 2002 Ford Escape. It ran perfectly until I took it for a car wash and it rained hard the next day. I then had rough idling, laboured acceleration and I threw a Code saying I was missing in 2 and...

I think someone gave you wrong information. You know what a rough idle and a misfire you just went through it. And you went through a emission test and passed. Here the thing about the emission test they do it 2 ways if you went on a dyno. The dyno loads the engine and pressurize the system. It looks for pressure failure, like sparkvoltage leaks, and like transmission pressure line and test its ability to maintain gear ratio at an approprate load. Then the dyno heats the vehicle now it looks for operating temperature and that all sensor are within fuel control and do not go out of range. Here the thing. 5000k and 4000k it takes that much to get it to cruising speed. and once there its okay. You are describing a transmission slip. And catalytic costing 4 thousand. From the dealer? If the catalytic are clog there is no way to get it to cruising speed , No youll loose power and the vehicle will keep slowing down. If the transmission is slipping it will slip in a variety of ways One way is what you described. It will 5000k and 4000k to get it to cruising speed then its okay. And not do highway speed , catalytic is about 1200. transmission are 4000k.Plus Ford tried to sue states that put the vehicle on dynos, due to the high trans failures(this is on going debate)

Replace the gas cap and then either ask the auto zone to reset the computer again or disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery for 1 min then reconnect it.

Checking the light does not even come on at all

(a) Description
When troubleshooting OBDII vehicles, the only difference
from the usual troubleshooting procedure
is that you connect to the vehicle the OBDII scan
tool complying with SAE J1978 or TOYOTA handheld
tester, and read off various data output from
the vehicle’s ECM.
OBDII regulations require that the vehicle’s onboard
computer lights up the Malfunction Indicator
Lamp (MIL) on the instrument panel when the computer
detects a malfunction in the emission control
system/components or in the powertrain control
components which affect vehicle emissions, or a
malfunction in the computer. In addition to the MIL
lighting up when a malfunction is detected, the applicable
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) prescribed
by SAE J2012 are recorded in the ECM memory
(See page DI-14 ).
If the malfunction does not reoccur in 3 consecutive trips, the
MIL goes off automatically but the DTCs remain recorded in the
ECM memory.
