How do you access the on board computer without a code reader?

You can access the computer codes using a paperclip for OBD I, (first generation on-board diagnostics), but if your vehicle is equipped with an OBDII, (second generation system), you need a diagnostic tool to read the 'P' codes.

Find the data link connector, w/ a paper clip, u have to jump terminals A and B, then turn key to on position, count check engine light for flashes. Count flashes to determine trouble codes. To see diagram of link connector w/ A and B terminal locations to jump, and list of codes, go to www.troublecodes.net/GM/

Do you need a certain type of obd reader for a 97 olds achieva? Used an inexpensive obd2 reader but it failed to communicate.

Not all readers are created equal. It all has to do with how they interface with the on board computer system, it is called "protocol" Make sure you get a reader that is listed as being able to read 1997 GM system fault codes. You can also go to any Autozone and have them read your codes.

Check engine soon light on

Yes, but you will need a code reader (also called a scan tool) to get the code from the computer. Do not remove the cables from the battery until you check the codes because on many vehicles (and almost all vehicles before 2008) this will reset the check engine light. You can go to an Auto Zone store and they will check your codes for free, or you can purchase a code reader online (you can find many on Amazon--see the link at the end of this post). Be advised that cheaper readers won't capture all codes or will often deliver a generic code that is not intuitive. Auto Zone uses a cheaper reader so your result may not be optimal. The alternative is to go to a reputable repair shop or dealer where they use the more expensive Actron or similar readers to get a more accurate result, but of course they will charge you for the service. One common reason for a check engine light is a loose gas cap because the computer picks upa drop in fuel line pressure. Best of luck! Code Readers and Scan Tools

You'll need someone to check the body computer for trouble codes to know what to do next. You may find an auto parts store with the right code reader to access the body computer, but most readers only access the engine computer.
Once you have the codes a mechanic can check those codes to find the problem.

Are you using a scanner that will access the body computer ?
Generic code readers may only access the engine computer.

ABS-traction control check and service

I'll start with the code reader. Most simple readers will only read engine codes. You need a professional scan tool that does everything to access the body computer data.
It could be a wheel sensor which the ABS system uses, or one of the other components in the ABS system.

There are a number of things that could be wrong. You need to scan your onboard computer system to retrieve the fault code that was stored when the computer turned the light on. Without the fault code, it would be anybody's guess.

Also note that you will have to access your suspension control module/antilock brake control module to check this. Most generic OBD code readers cannot perform this function. (Including the ones that are used as sales tools at the local parts store)

Et1505an code reader comes up with link error every time i try to scan my 04 f-150 is it the scanner or my truck if it is my truck what is the cause. How would I fix it ?

The only way to find out if it is the code reader or the truck is to plug in another code reader or scan tool and see if it gives you the same results (try this first).

NOTE: Generic OBD code readers will operate ONLY on the Class 2 data link. A true scan tool will operate on BOTH the Class 2 and the UART lines. Accessing the onboard computer system with a scan tool may give you a fault code that indicates that the Class 2 circuits may be malfunctioning.

To diagnose onboard computer network communications malfunctions, the proper equipment that can communicate with the ENTIRE network must be used. Please note that generic OBD code readers cannot perform this function.
