I am getting really bad fumes inside when I crack a window or open the sunroof. I noticed a bad seal on the rear hatch and fixed it, but it still does it - only when I crack a window though. I smell nothing if everything is closed up. Any ideas?
Sounds to me like you have a pretty decent exhaust leak, it only sucks it inside when you crack a window ??Sounds to me like you have a pretty decent exhaust leak, it only sucks it inside when you crack a window ??

I've had this problem on a 924 and a 944. The problem will be the seal around the rear tail light, on the exhaust tail pipe side. Another source of the problem could be rear hatch seal or rear hatch adjustment.
If you smell fuel too (with a full tank), replace the hose and the two rubber sleeves between the fill point and the fuel tank. These are under the carpet in the rear of the car.

Inside the rear tail gate hatch should be a small access panel. Remove the access panel so you can manually open the rear hatch by grabbing the small metal rod linkage. They put this access panel so if the door motor actuator goes bad you can still open the rear hatch. After you open the rear hatch manually by the linkage rod. Remove the entire inside hatch trim panel so you can see all the inner workings of it and self diagnos. It sound like the electric door motor actuator has gone bad. This is pretty common for any GM product. Hope this hopes.
Three things come to mind. You may have an exhaust system leak. Or, the rear hatch is not closing good, or not sealing properly, allowing exhaust fumes to enter the rear compartment. If you drive with the rear windows open, the exhaust fumes will be drawn into the vehicle while the vehicle is moving. Just some ideas on where to look for the source of the fumes. Don't take the problem lightly. The fumes can be deadly, or at the very least, make you ill.
I am assuming that this comming in through the fresh air duct. You most likley have a bad exhaust flang gasket. You really need to get this fixed as we don't want you getting sleepy behind the wheel doing 70mph down the hwy. Open the hood and try to listen for the leak.
My 2001 passat did the same thing. my leak was coming from the door panel. Open your door and use a water hose to simulate rain water running against your window. Water should run into door and drain out of several drain holes at the very bottom of your door. Check for water leaking from the bottom of your plastic door panel. The water runs down into the door and leaks through your inner door panel seal causing water to leak inside from the bottom of your door panel and run into the floorboard instead of draining out the water hole in the bottom of your door.
Sounds to me like you have a pretty decent exhaust leak, it only sucks it inside when you crack a window ??
