Hi angelakelly

Bad battery
The best way to check a battery is to put it on charge (10-15 amps overnight) and then check it with a hydrometer.

The hydrometer measures the specific gravity of the Battery which is an indication of the amount of acid in the liquid.

Batteries are a limited life item. If the hydrometer reading is low (after an overnight charge) this means the battery needs to be replaced. You can get a hydrometer at any walmart or auto parts store, They are only about $5.

Good luck Loringh PS Please leavr a rating if appropriate

Works with charged battery. Then goes dead. 89 volvo 240

Alternator is failing. Cheaper to replace than to try to disassemble and rebuild.

I need to know the steps for uninstalling, and reinstalling the alternator on a 1989 Volvo 240 DL.

1. Disconnect the battery
2 Loosen botls so you can remove the drive belt to alternator.
3. If it has a serpertine belt, then pry with proper tool on the tensioner to remove the belt.
4. Disconnect harness to alternator and ground wire if any and filter condenser if any.
5. Loosen bolts to alternator and remove alternator.
6. If AC equipped, not knowing your belt configuration would require to loosen the AC Belt also, depending if your alternator belts is the first one near the engine, then all belts have to be loosen to remove it. unless #3 applies.
Reverse the steps to put it back on.

Car stalls and will not even turnover

Make sure you check the wiring to the alternator. It goes under the front of the engine and it it prone to deterioration from oil and heat. The insulation wears of and the wires will short out, causing the alternator to stop charging.
