Question about 2002 Ford F250 Super Duty SuperCab

2002 F250 7.3 drains batteries and dies

I have replaced both batteries and alternator and truck will run till batteries are depleaded then die

    Had all the wiring checked, installed 2 new batteries and so far 2 new alternators and it lost power again today. First the lights dimmed and then it died while driving. All in 3 weeks, and way too much spent on this problem and still not solved...any one know of anything else?

You need to have the alternator re-checked and be sure the wiring is clean & correct. If an alternator is working properly & wiring is correct, those batteries should be charging as you drive.

Something is drawing power from the battery and draining it. All of a sudden the car will just die. What could be causing this, and is it a common problem?


alternator is prob. bad. an easy way to check it is to start the car and while its running disconect the negative battery terminal if the car dies right away its not charging at all. if it stays running then turn on the headlights ot it dies then is a weak alternator. sounds like it was going bad when you bought the new battery and didnt need a new battery. you take it it any autozone and they test the alternator in the store to what its output is.

2002 Honda crv headlights were left on, they were turned off before battery drained, started fine in morning but on the way to work power drained down until vehicle died, replaced battery and now battery...


Check to see if alternator is charging. Battery light is an indicator that your alternator is not charging. Start engine use multimeter at battery 20 v dc or if autorange meter just dc. engine at idle the battery should read 14 - 14.5 volts. if not replace alternator.

Sounds like your alternator went out or not making good connection at the battery terminals, preventing the battery from being charged. If the battery does not charge, you will use up the battery energy to maintain the vehicle running UNTIL you deplete the battery. the more accesories you have on, the faster it discharges till the point of killing your ignition on your engine. You definitely have a charging issue, more than likely, your alternator went out.

I would agree with the mechanic. Since the engine will start but dies, you can assume that the battery may be (barely) strong enough to start the vehicle but not strong enough to keep it running. After the engine starts, the alternator does the lions share of producing enough electrical energy to produce a strong spark at the spark plugs. If the alternator is not doing its job, the battery drain fairly rapidly and your engine will die. Within a fair degree of certainty, I would say that the "trac off" light will not occur after the alternator is replaced.

I have a 1991 Dodge Ram 150 V8. I have replaced the battery and alternator and the battery still going down.


you need to test the alternator output in the car with the engine running it should read around 14.2 vdc. if the out put is lower the voltage regulator is part of the engine control computer. and will need to be tested. if the voltage is correct. then you will need to do a battery draw test hear is a viedo on that.

What initiated the need for jump starting? Is the alternator charging? Has the battery been checked?

To check the alternator, once the engine has been jumped and is running, remove one of the battery post connections. If the engine dies, the alternator is not charging the battery, and the symptoms you describe are the on-board computer going through low voltage spasms until sufficient electrical power to operate the engine / tranny is drained and the car dies.

If the car continues to run with no battery attached, the alternator is charging - - - and I would recommend removing the battery and having it checked and (if good) recharged to full capacity. I would also recommend having it charged even if the alternator is the problem just to delay the onset of the low voltage problems. The car should operate normally for a few miles before the battery drains too low after a full recharge, enabling you to get it to a shop for alternator service / replacement.

If you attempt replacing the alternator yourself, make sure the battery is disconnected prior to starting the job. Saves blowing up good stuff by accidental short.
