The red coating on the seal is sealer, once it gets hot it softens and keeps fluid from going around the seal barrel, this can really get stuck, a small slide hammer with a screw on the end works well for the really stubborn ones.

If I understand you correctly the drive shaft you took out is actually a CV axle. The inner axle shaft goes into the diff. That is held in with a snap ring in the diff. It might not come out easy, sometimes they do, use a pry bar to pop it out. Be careful not to break or damage the aluminum housing. There have been times where I had to use a strong air hammer to beat on the back side of that flange to get the axle shaft out... It's sort of like taking a CV axle out of a front wheel drive car.
Remove the front drive shaft remove the drive yoke off the pinion shaft remove the old seal install new seal install front drive shaft. PS check pinion bearing play before removing drive yolk. if it is loose then you might also need bearings
You only have one option. (well 2, if you don't want to drive the truck) the front diff turns no matter what you do. Your pinion bearings are shot. The pinion will still turn when you drive it, even if the driver shaft is gone. Bearing and seal kits run around $300. For newer models. Older ones a bit more. Once the pinion and ring gear go away, add $200. Spider gears and such. Costs go up to as much as $1300. You can get a used diff for around $300. Depends on year make and model.
This is not easy....You will need air tools ,spray penetrate,seal remover,hammer,and Jack stands..Seal installation tool,.All proper tools..safety glasses.correct seal replacement.,new lock nut...Set park brake,block rear wheels,raise vehicle front and safely place jack stands under each side of lower control arms..Spray lube front drive shaft mounting hardware and lock nut that holds Yoke on front diff..Let it set to penetrate..put vehicle in neutral..Mark shaft to yoke location and direction perfectly because it has to be installed in perfect timing exactly how it was removed..,Remove drive shaft..Remove lock nut and yoke from front diff...You will have to hold yoke while removing lock nut because it will spin..PROTECT HANDS..( These can be VERY DIFFICULT to remove..Sometimes they have to be heated..You will need a yoke removal tool if it doesn't tap off with hammer...Mark exactly the yoke to spline location before removal..You can take close up photos however Mark it also to be sure...If you re-install it wrong it will vibrate terribly..Once yoke is removed You can remove seal.Make sure the new seal is correct...CAREFULLY..DO NOT DAMAGE SPLINES WHILE REMOVING..Sometimes even the perfect seal remover will damage splines..So cover it to protect spline threads..Clean all areas once seal is removed..Make sure nothing is pitted or damaged...Install new seal with installation tool..Lightly,perfectly tap it flush with diff..You can use old seal to install new seal if you don't have installation tool But only a pro should do that...Once in place Line drive shaft yoke with your marks and tap it on ..Use NEW LOCKNUT AND TORQUE IT TO SPEC..Install drive shaft as marked..torque to spec..Lower truck and check fluid..Complete..
remove axle nut, remove lower ball joint nut, pop drive shaft loose with punch or wood dowel , pop lower ball join from knuckle pull up push axle out of knuckle , pull back knuckle and tie in place pop out axle with big screwdriver or pry bar ,remove seal replace.
You need to replace the seal. If you are describing the driveshaft coming from the Transfer case, the part would be called a Pinion seal. You can price the repair by using this description and the Repair shop will know what you are talking about.
Sometimes people refer to the smaller shafts between the wheels and the front differential as driveshafts too. They are cv shafts or output shafts.
if it is leaking from the front of the diff where the drive line goes into it you have to drop the rear of the drive shaft from the diff, if you look at the flange on the diff where the driveshaft bolted to you will see a nut, possibly about 25 to 30mm, you have to remove the nut and remove the flange off the spline of the input shaft of the diff, the nut is really tight and it is difficult to get enough pressure on the nut to "crack it" while the car is on the ground as there is not enough room to get a long bar on the socket to remove the nut.
if you happen to get the nut loose and you remove the flange get a big screwdriver and pry the seal out of the diff, check the surface where the seal ran on the input shaft as it may have a groove worn into it, if it has the groove the new seal will still leak, they make a sleeve you can slide over the shaft to give the seal a good surface to run on, we call them a speedy sleeve here but not sure what they may call them there. replace everything in the reverse order that you removed it and don't forget to tension the big nut that holds the flange onto the input shaft
leaking where? axle shafts? pinion seal? diff cover?
should inspect diff internals and bearings-may require overhaul not just
seal replacment. also check vent tube-if plugged will cause all seals to leak.
I cannot see it, but I am guessing that you need to replace your axle seal. To do this,you have to pull your CV shaft out. Remove the tire, remove the caliper from the top of the rotor. Using a hammer on the back, remove the rotor. Take off the spindle (axle) nut, separate the axle (CV shaft) from the hub. Replace seal. It should pop right out. Good luck!
