Question about BMW 325

1 Answer

Starting and rpms

Recently I purchased my car. I had a brake line changed and then I had problems starting the car.

Once started, I can stop and start the car no problem.
At the same time, when first driving the rpms go to 4000 before it will shift. Once the first shift happens shifting is fine.

The previous owner told me to check the vacum hoses as he belived the transmission was fine.

Suggestions please.

It is possible they knocked a line or the linkage when replacing your brake line, alot of mechanics are careless with other parts of the car in hopes you will come back to them. take it to a different shop and have them check the linkage and lines to the trans.

What was the PO code exactly.
The 5.0 was know for having vacumme leaks around the engine compartment and intake leaks.
The easiest way to test for an intake leak is to spray starting fluid around the intake while your having the ruff idol. If the RPMs increase then you have a vacumme leak.
It usually goes away once the engine is warmed up because the rubber expands and fills the gaps stopping the leak.

Does yours have the problem all the time or only while cold?

There is a Hose that comes off the Brake Booster and goes to the Crankcase Breather, this is how the Vacuum for the Brakes gets its ability to work. It is more than likely disconnected or the Valve is defective.

I doubt the two problems are related.
The computer uses an idle speed control valve to regulate idle speed. The valve controls the amount of air entering the intake.
You should have a check engine light on and also a stored trouble code for the valve. It could also be a problem with the throttle plate in the throttle body.

It could be a vaccuum line leak. Depending on the make model of car there could be a bunch. Not to fear though there is a sure fire way of finding it (the leak). Grab a can of starting fluid if no SF then carb cleaner or maybe wd40. have someone keep the car runningas low of rpm as possible once the rpms are stable at one speed start spraying little bursts of the starting fluid. If it is avaccuum leak the vehicle will increase in rpms. However look for a crack in the intake manifold loose carb or injector tree.

Glad to help. Check those brake linings for any signs of burning...If they have been running too tight it is possible that they have overheated a bit. Also check the emergency brake cable for binding sometimes they get rusted up and stick.
