I have a 2005 Jimmy automatic trans, push button 4wd. I had it in 4wdh to get out our drive way but when I went to put it back into 2wd it would not shift back. The light on the button wouldn't work ether. To get it back into 2wd I had to park, put the trans into neutral hit 4wd low then back to 2wd, the lights on the buttons even worked,so I got it back to2wd but no mater what I do it will not go back into 4wd high,4wd low works but not 4wd high. You can shift into and out of 4wd hi in any gear even when vehicle is moving. You must stop and put in neutral to shift into or out of 4wd low.
To see if it is working, go to a dirt field or on the beach if one is available. Put truck in four wheel drive, turn steering wheel all the way one way or the other and stick you head out the driver window and look at the front tire and "PUNCH IT". If the four wheel drive is working you will see the front tire spin. Hope this helps.
I have had similar problems with my burb also. Mine would shift into 4wd at any time, then not go back to 2wd. I have taken it to the dealer multiple times. the first time I was told in not so many words that I was crazy and it worked fine for them. the second time they experienced it and said it was a bad sensor and they replaced it and it was good for about a year. Now the warenty has expired and it is acting up again, can't wait to here what they say this time. Curse GM, they should have been allowed to fail, all they do is produce crappy products. The only way I would buy another GM product is if they start producing Hondas.
Usually when a truck gets stuck in 4 low you need to put it in reverse, start backing up very slowly, put it in neutral (or push in the clutch on manual trans models) and stop the truck with the brakes. this will release the load on the gearing which should allow you to shift out of 4 low.
sounds like the vacuum lines are either pinched or the vacuum pump is shot. try getting a mechanic look at the lines on and around your transfer case... also try checking the fuses for the 4wd selector. let me know how it goes
I have had the same problem with my 2000 jimmy. Disconnect the battery for approx 1 minute and then reconnect, this should reset the computer. It has worked for me every time. I was told it was a glitch with GMC.
