Transmission shifts to second gear and stays there

I have a 1989 chrysler that shifts up through the gears just fine and then it abruptly kicks down to the limp home mode . the car has a amitsubishi three litre engine

Could Be that your TCM is losing power. I would check to see if the TCM is firmly attached to the passenger side fender wall. If not it could be losing the ground.

Sounds like your kick down cable has stuck or broke, check the kick down cable....

Here is an article I found talking about the Transmission. The second generation Grand Cherokee: 1999-2004 Jeep WJ The first Grand Cherokee was redesigned in 1999, for lower production cost and greater performance and reliability; it was Chrysler's first use of an electronic bus to replace individual wires throughout the body.

Jeep five-speed automatic transmission

An all-new, electronically-controlled transmission with five forward ratios including an alternate second gear ratio for improved performance for passing and better fuel economy is available with the V-8 only, and was designed specifically for Jeeps.

The transmission features unique characteristics such as a tall, 3.00:1 first gear that gives the driver better initial acceleration. Real-time driver adaptive shifting fine-tunes the shift pattern to the driver, while an alternate second gear ratio gives the driver five forward ratios. During acceleration, second gear has a ratio of 1.67. Depending on speed and throttle position, both this gear and an alternate 1.50 second gear ratio are available for kick-down operation, making the down-shift smoother. Its reverse gear ratio is equal to the first gear ratio, to allow for heavier loads.

Other features include three planetary gear sets that combine the widest range of gear ratios available in any transmission in its class. Combined with precise step selections, this brings smooth shifts and maximum power and optimal fuel economy.

The transmission is built at the Indiana Transmission Plant in Kokomo, Indiana, in an all-new 1.2-million square-foot (110,000 m2) facility.

run the fault codes to find the reported fault
engine lights report on engines and transmissions
could be actuator or vacuum to actuator, dirty transmission oil or pump pressure problems

When it shift from third gear to second gear it makes an abrupt shift. This problem is only from third to second gear, the other gears shift nice and quiet. The transmission is new only 3 months old.


Hopefully this Transmission is still under warranty?
If its a stick the shifter or schronizers could be the culprit. If the vehicle is an automatic,shift solenoid, shifter, problems in 2nd and 3rd circuitry (band or clutch not releasing properly ),manual shift valve .
Take it back to whom ever did the rebuild or transmission work tell them the problem .
Business is so demanding these days they will probably do the right thing.

Transmission problem stuck in sport shift mode


I also have a 2009 Outlander Sportronic transmission with a V6 engine.
Bought it this summer ... transmission appeared fine but seemed to automatically slow down the vehicle using the engines compression whenever I let go of the gas pedal.
Now that the cold weather is upon us here in Canada, whenever I accelarate normally (not like a teenager) the transmission takes quite a bit of time to shift into second... If I rev up the engine (quick take off) it seems to help but the shifting of gears is not as smooth as I would expect it (mildly slips and kicks into second)...

The worst is when come to a complete stop ... then the transmission kicks coming down from the higher gears???

I read somewhere that this is because this transmission is a CVT type and is learning my driving habits in order to adjust itself so the vehicle becomes more fuel efficient... Not sure but if the trany is computer controlled then it must be poorly writen program...
I'm taking the car in to the dealer and will write back on the diagnostic they give me ...
