Starter problem when car is cold

3 months ago we purchased a 1996 Subaru Legacy GT used with about 150k miles. This problem just started since it is very cold in the mornings. When I go out to start the car, I turn the ignition and nothing happens...just dead silence. I turn it for about 5 minutes and then it starts. It's like it starts to warm up as I am attempting to start it. Does anyone know what is causing the problem? Someone mentioned moisture in the starter...is this possible?

I would suggest starting with the battery. Have it checked by someone who knows how to check a battery, by what is known as a load test.

A battery is affected by cold weather, the colder the temperature, the less active it will be. As you are turning on the ignition switch, you are activating the cells in the battery, and this in turn begins to warm up the battery.

A new, healthy battery would not have this problem.

If your not getting any sound at all, it means it is your ignition, and by holdin the key you are probably jumping the connections.

Replce the ignition and your problem will go away.

It could be the relay, But I don't think you have one, most starters are direct wired from the key to a solenoid on the starter, If there is a relay, it is the big fuse box under the hood, and is just a electric switch, not subject to cold. It sounds more like the terminals are filthy and the contacts are not connecting. Clean off all the wires with a wire brush and scrub the terminals with it, get underneath the connections too. Where the battery cables connect to the lead terminals, If I was up there I would be plugging in my car at night to keep it warm. It will start right up in the morning.

Hi,
The 1st>>2nd shift on the Subaru 4EAT automatic transmission can be more abrupt, but 3500 is too high.
Is there any delay when shifting from Park to Drive?
Does the Power light flash on startup? If it does, you can pull the codes by following these instructions.

This trans has 'bands' that can be adjusted. I'm not 100% sure they affect the 1st>2nd gear shift, but maybe they need adjusted.

Take a look @ ultimatesubaru.org/forum and http://bbs.legacycentral.org. 2 sites dedicated to Subarus.

Good luck,

Replaced battery about a month ago. After about as

Could be a poor connection on one of the battery terminals - be sure they are tight.
Could also be a starter solenoid that is sticking.

My 95 legacy just had a problem not moving out of park. I ended up taking the console off and found the little button that is supossed to move when you push on the brake was not moving. With the cover off I can just push it with my finger. There may be a part to replace, I haven't had time to investigate further. I hope this helps. Joe L.

Probably a short or loose connection between battery and starter motor, or on either end of cables. Id look there before swapping out starter. On cold days you might put a heater under car for a few hours before using it,do this carefully as to avoid a car fire, or look into a block heater for your engine.

Burning over a quart of oil every two weeks

you more than likely have some bad rings.

Go to autozone and buy a bottle of Lucas oil treatment, and add it to the oil, if this does not solve the problem you will need an engine rebuild.
