I have a 91 Dodge Dakota 5.2L V8 2WD truck and it has an intermittent problem starting and running. Sometimes it works fine, other times it will crank but won't turn over, other times it will chug and not start, and even other times it will lose power and chug while I'm driving. It has overheated in the past, and run out of gas a couple times, not sure if that makes a difference. I just changed the fuel filter and that didn't fix the problem, any help or advice on what to do next would be appreciated.
Compression , timing and fuel. Check to see if you have a corroded coil wire connection at coil and distributor. See if you have a worn shaft in the distributor, it will move side to side if it's worn. Remove the distributor and check the gear to see if it's tight and pin not worn in it. Overheating can be caused by timing change due to worn timing chain, bad distributor. Remove the cap and sparkplugs, put a wrench on the crankshaft nut /bolt and rock the engine back and forth to see how far you have to turn it before the cam distributor starts to turn. Any lapse will be due to stretched and worn chain If it's fuel problem you can prime the intake with small amount of fuel to see if it aides in starting. If not it's either timing or compression problem. .

I have a 91 suburban and it wont hold idle. I am waiting for and egr valve. if that fixes it i will let you know. I was told that they can have an internal vacuum leak therefore being difficult to detect.
SOURCE: 91 F150 runs rough at low idle
If you put a scanner on it and you have no misfire codes I would be looking at either an egr valve stuck open a little or a bad Idle Air Control Valve

try bypassing the oil pressure switch on the back of the block behind the distributor, if there oil pressure switch goes bad it will do this. had one that drove me nuts trying to fix it then figured out I had to buy a book and low and behold thee it was 3 wire oil pressure switch you can't see between the engine and fire wall just behind the distributor and costs 8 bucks to buy new.
