Where is the timing chain tensioner located on a 4.0 SOHC, 1998 Ford Explorer 2 door

The tensioner is located at the rear (right side) of motor. Jack the car up, remove right front wheel, remove the splash guard. Looking up, above the exhaust manifold near rear of motor you'll see a BLACK 25mm or 27mm bolt head....That's the tensioner.

stop by local parts store (Autozone,Advance, etc) and have them do a free fault code test. They can print out a list of faults and clear the codes

How can I tell if I have the SOHC or pushrod 4.0litre engine in my 2000 Ford Explorer Sport?

The vin number is the easiest way to tell for sure, if you can give me the vin i can help you with that, also typically the sohc has a engine cover that says sohc. Please rate this answer as that is my only compensation. Thankyou

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer with a 4.0 engine and a SOHC. I need to replace the thermastat housing. Is there to replace it without having to remove the intake manifold.

Yes. You should be able to replace it without removing the intake manifold. The bolts are very hard to reach, but it can be done with the proper set of sockets and universal joint extensions. I know it looks impossible. If in doubt, take it to a reputable repair shop. Don't let anybody charge you for intake manifold removal.

No reverse..1998 exporer sport 2 door 4x4 sohc v6 auto

your transmission part number for a motocraft rebuilt trans would be TRM1341, as far as they list it the transmission was only for that year, meaning you would need to find another 1998 explorer or 1998 mercury mountaineer in order to replace your trans. hope this helps :)
