Sometime these arms are threaded. Is so you lost the nut. If not then there is a lock washer that is supposed to be on it. I hope this helps out.

Is it the back hatch? Can you pull the rod on the broke side & pull handle at the same time?

My rear hatch will not open on my 1998 jeep grand cherokee

Your Grand Cherokee has a small pop off panel on the inside of the rear hatch trim...after carefully removing this panel reach inside the opening and you will find a release cable...pull on this cable and the hatch latch should release...then try lubricating the latch at all contact points, and the mechanism itself...if the latch does not release the next try, then you will need to replace this latch...this is a dealer or salvage yard part...your least costly replacement will be through the salvage yard market...some salvage yards are now on-line, and will ship the part to you. Hope this helps.

Rear hatch will not unlock

When the latch mechanism screws come loose the door will not open with the key or electric door lock. From inside the bagage compartment you will have to remove the rear plastic panels (which you can't do because some of the screws are now inaccessable!) The trick is to remove as many screws as you can. A couple of screws are hidden under the carpet trim of the rear door panel-towards the corners, feel around for the holes. Now pry away the top of the plastic panel just below the rear window in the center- the plastic will bow out enough to get an arm in. The plastic can be sharp so wear a thin long sleeve shirt. reach down and feel 5 inches to the right of center. there is a rod that unlatches the door. you can grab a flashlight and have an assitant lift up the rear hatch lever while you look down at the lock mechanism- you will see or feel the rod move. pull up on this rod. With the door now open you can continue taking off the rear trim cover and fix the latch problem.

What is he best way to fix the latch/handle on the rear hatch door? The handle operates (moves), but the latch does not release.

The screws securing the latch mechanism may have come loose. I had this problem. I had to remove all the screws from the rear hatch panel, within the luggage compartment. I pulled the panel away from the bottom of the window, bent it slightly, enough to get my arm in there to reach down to pull on the lever that releases the latch. grab a flashlight and a partner. have your partner turn the key to "open" and pull on the rear door handle. with the flashlight you will be able to see or feel the rod moving. pull up on this rod. After you get the door open spray some lube on the lock mechanism and adjust as needed. The rod that you pulled on can be adjusted

My rear hatch is stuck closed on my 1995 jeep grand cherokee

Two problems with those are that the lock and latch assemblies rust up or the linkage rod between the handle and latch falls off. Best and easiest way in is to cut a hole into the plastic panel and reach in and pull the rod up. There is another way that requires drilling a small hole in the outside handle cover but most people opt for the other way. the panels are usually available very cheap at most junkyards. I use epoxy putty to hold the rod into the clip after re-attaching it because the clip itself is a poor design that fails easily.

Can not open rear hatch ,

I have seen many of that design with the latch assembly very rusted to the point where it freezes up. You can cut away a section of the inner panel and get in there that way (then making a cover or obtaining one from a scrapyard, OR, you can drill a quarter inch hole in the lock trim on the drivers side exactly opposite where the key lock is (dead center) That should go right into the only bolt that holds the assembly to the door. The lock end has a tab that fits under the door skin. Once you have the outer mechanism loose you can pull on the control rod and disengage the latch. Once you are finished, counter-sink the hole you made and use a tulip head screw with a nut on the inside to re-attach the handle. Paint the head black and it isn't really obvious. (or get another from a scrapyard)

96 jeep Grand Cherokee tailgate will not open

This is kind of tricky. OK let's start, you have to crawl into the rear hatch area from the inside of the car. You'll have to pull the rear panel off the hatch, a screwdriver between the panel and hatch near the window will work. There might be 2 screws on the panel you could take out. The trick is to pull the panel far away enough to stick your arm down towards the latch and release it by hand. We did this at the dealer all the time.
