There are two caliper bolts holding caliper to the caliper bracket, remove those first. then you must twist the caliper piston in a clockwise rotation and push in on the piston to get it to return to it's fully released position. then you can remove the caliper bracket if you are replacing or machining thr brake rotor. install in reverse order. make sure you lubricate the caliper pins in the bracket before reinstalling.

How to Change Your Brake Pads

Brake Pads should be replaced in pairs, the front will wear faster than the rear so usually the front will need to be replaced more often.
First Here is a list of what you will need. This list mainly applies to disc brakes but I have included a link for how to replace drum brakes with graphic images. All parts can be purchased from an auto parts or hardware store.
  • New Brake Pads
  • C-Clamp
  • Small amount of Brake/Caliper Grease (usually comes in a small packet)
  • A can of Brake Cleaner
  • Car-jack and lug wrench
  • A small bungee cord
  • Wrench/Socket/Allen Wrench (depending on your car)
  • A hammer (mainly for drum brakes)
  1. Lossen the lug nuts.
  2. Jack up the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire from the vehicle.
  4. Use the brake cleaner to spray the brake pads and disc taking care not to spray plastic parts on the vehicle. This is done to partly protect yourself from the brake dust and to also clean everything and help remove rust.
  5. The following steps are for disc brakes, for drum brakes skip to step 15.
  6. Next, remove the caliper bolts, the heads will be located on the inside side of the caliper, the wrench needed will vary base on vehicle make and model.
  7. Slide the caliper and brake pads off of the disc.
  8. Remove the outer brake pad.
  9. The bungee cord may be used to keep the caliper from hanging freely. Do not allow the brake line to be bent or hold the caliper itself.
  10. Use the C-Clamp to slowly depress the inner brake pad as far as it can go. If any brake fluid leaks out of the reservoir, it may need to be replaced once brakes are replaced. Make sure to press the brake pedal several times between each tire having brakes replaced to help keep brake fluid from leaking. Some brake fluid may be siphoned beforehand to prevent loosing any fluid.
  11. If the disc is to be replaced, do so now, spray the new disc with brake cleaner to remove any residue. The disc should be replaced if grooves or chips are found on it, or if it is outside of thickness specifications of the manufacturer.
  12. Grease the caliper bolts.
  13. Put the new brake pads on the caliper and slide the brake pads and caliper back onto the disc and insert the bolts.
  14. Skip to Step 18 for disc brakes.
  15. For drum brakes, use the hammer, brake cleaner, and possibly a pry bar to remove the drum which should slide directly off.
  16. Use the brake cleaner to spray the brake pads and other parts within the drum to clean and prevent dust from being breathed in.
  17. Use the following link for better information on how to replace drum brakes http://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-replace-rear-brake-shoes-and-drums
  18. Mount the tire, bolt on the lug nuts, and remove the jack.
  19. Press the brake a few times and clean up.
Congrats on replacing the brake pads on your vehicle.

How to take back rotors off a 1994 honda civic.

PATH: Brakes > Front Disc Brakes > Brake Disc (Rotor) > Removal & Installation Removal & Installation
  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the front wheels.
  2. Remove the caliper assembly; do not let the caliper assembly hang by the brake hose, instead support it with a piece of wire looped around the front spring or control arm.
  3. Remove the retaining screw from the brake rotor and remove the rotor from the hub.

An impact driver, No. 3 phillips screwdriver bit, and a hammer may be needed to remove the retaining screw. It is fairly easy to destroy the screw slots using an ordinary phillips screwdriver to remove the tightly driven screw (see photo).

  1. To install the disc, replace the disc on the hub, screw in the retaining screw and replace the caliper assembly.

PATH: Brakes > Rear Disc Brakes > Brake Disc (Rotor) > Removal & Installation Removal & Installation
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Disconnect the caliper from the caliper bracket. Support the caliper out of the way with a length of wire. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
  4. Remove the caliper bracket.
  5. Remove the two 6mm screws and the brake disc. If the brake disc is difficult to remove, install two 8mm bolts into the threaded holes and tighten them evenly to prevent cocking the rotor.
  6. Install the rotor in position. Install the two 6mm retaining screws.
  7. Install the brake caliper. Install the tire and wheel assembly.

How to change back brakes 1999 ford windstar, back brakes are grinding, brake light on

does it have rear disc brakes or drum brakes, if disc brakes should be changed just like the front and you might have an emergency brake shoe inside the rotor that they call a halo shoe, if it is drum brakes take off the adjusting spring and the return spring remove the brake adjuster, the the brake bar then remove the brake shoe hold down spring by holding the pin from the back and pushing and turning the spring to remove from the pin, you might have to remove the the emergency brake bar from one shoe by removing the horseshoe clip from the pin on the shoe if you have problems putting it back together look at the other side that you have not torn down yet.

Rear disc brakes

Raise the rear of the truck off the ground using jacks. Support the vehicle on both sides with jack stands to prevent it from tipping over.
Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels and remove the wheels assembly and set aside, face up, to prevent damage.
Disconnect the caliper bolts and remove the brake caliper. Use mechanic's wire to fasten the caliper to your truck's side rail. Take out the outer disc brake pads followed by the inner pads.
Compress the brake piston into the caliper bore using a C-clamp. Replace the inner brake pads followed by the outer brake pads. Remove the C-clamp.
Remove the mechanic's wire from the caliper. Lay the caliper over the pads, fasten it down and tighten the caliper bolts with the torque wrench to 26 ft. lb.
Replace the wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground. Bleed the brakes if necessary and check the brake performance during a short test drive.
Good luck and hope this helps.
