Would not start. New starter. Fired it up, it ran, but starter would not disengage...even with the key out! Disconnected battery. Now regardless of key position and key or not, starter comes on and stays on as soon as the battery is connected, but the engine cranks, but will not turn over. Like there is no spark or no fuel. Can't diagnose second part until I can get the starter to quit. Help!
Find the starter relay under the hood. It may be bad and stuck so power continues going to the starter. Try a new relay Or try pulling off the small signal wire on the relay (it is from the switch), and hook battery up. If starter continues to run, the relay is bad. If starter is stopped, put the signal wire back on relay. If starter now starts operating, and key is still off, then switch may be bad .Location of relay may be at left front fender apron, in front of shock tower (like on earlier taurus models).

Upon removal of steering column, it seems the plastic actuator that goes from the key to ignition switch assembly is still good(thank god don't know how you'd get it out without popping all the tilt springs and removing those pinch pins) Also the switch assembly with (i think) 15 pins moves back and forth just as easy/tough as a brand new one. How do I test it independent of the column, need a diagram(couldn't match up all the wires with help from my Chilton)?
starter turns the engine 1/4 turn then disengages?
