Check the automatic transmission cable adjustment and fluid (ATF) level. Be sure that the car is in P, hand brake pulled, the engine is running and is at operating temperature. Do the following:
1. Take the transmission oil dip stick out, wipe it with fiber free tissue paper or clean piece of cloth and insert the dip stick back to its place.
2. While the engine is running, take the stick out again place it horizontal and see the oil level.
3.If the level is at upper mark or in between upper and lower marks it is OK. Put the stick back to its place.
4. If the transmission oil is less than lower mark, add the manufacturer specified oil up to the mark, and test drive the car.
5. If the oil level is found to be OK, remove the transmission filter, clean it or replace it, and test drive the car. It should now work.

1998 Ford Transit 2.5 turbo diesel long wheel base truck.

There isn't one. Because it is operated by putting the van into gear, it is probably a function of the BCM from a switch on the gearbox. Check the socket for continuity to ground and also for rust.

Ask your mechanics to look into these things: Plug Coils. (Pic below)
Better replace with Used ones (Japan made) from half-cuts than to buy brand new genuine Honda (Thai made) because the latters only last me for less than 18 months ! it sounds like your transmission is slipping. they make this chemical you can get at a part store, its a transmission stabalizer. it should help with the grinding noise and transitions to the other gears. also give your truck a complete tune up (oil change, fuel and air filters, spark plugs etc.) it should help with the fuel consumptions.

Transit 350 noisy axel

that noise is not bearings but but incorrect ring and pinion gear mesh, this is caused by incorrect backlash of the gear set, once it makes noise it is to late and gears must be replaced.

Transmission/shifting 2001 Sante Fe - Hyundai

Sounds like you might have serious internal transmission problems.

As soon as you can, get someone with a code reader to plug in the vehicle and find out what the code is for the Check Engine light to come on. Might give you a better picture of what`s going on.

It could also (cross your fingers) be something more usual like a clogged transmission filter (located inside the pan), or shift solenoid.

By the way, have you checked the level, look & smell of your transmission fluid?

Level should be checked with the vehicle running, after passing it in all gear ranges on the shifter, and putting it back in park (Check it on "cold" or "hot" level depending on if it`s been driving for a while or not).

As for look and smell, it should be reddish and not smell burnt. Hard to describe the smell of burnt transmission fluid, but normal fluid does not smell too strongly, kind of sweet. Burnt oil is usually black and has a strong odor. If the oil is burnt you have internal damage to the transmission.

One piece of advice I give you is get it fixed as soon as possible because if you don`t already have serious internal transmission problems, the longer you wait, the more chances you have of getting some, to the point of the vehicle just refusing to move. And believe me, speaking from experience, the transition point from the symptoms you describe to total refusal to move and the need for a tow/transmission rebuild is not that long usually.
