Re: convertible top acting up
There are a number of known issues affecting the 9-3 convertible top. TSB 811-1989 describes a problem and fix for the cables to the lock for the top cover. TSB 811-2101 refers to the jamming of the top cover due to a deformed hinge and provides the fix for this. TSB 811-2160 deals with instances where the first bow hits the top cover while the top is opening, due to a deformed shear pin, and provides that repair procedure. Where the soft top cannot be operated or it stops in mid-operation, the SID displays the message CHECK SOFT TOP COVER, and the following diagnostic trouble codes are be generated: B2025, B2026, B2030, B2031, refer to TSB 811-2236. Any of these four problems can result in the top cover failing to open and close properly, and can interrupt the smooth operation of the opening and closing of the top. Finally, the top may somehow have otherwise become out of sync and this does indeed require a Tech 2 diagnostic scan and programming tool to correct. All Saab dealerships have this tool, and an increasing number of independent shops that do appreciable work on Saabs are so equipped now.

check the condition and tension of the drive belt. Check that the battery terminals and posts are shiny clean and tight. Have the battery load tested for faulty cells. Have the alternator tested for output
All operations are handled by the convertible top control module. Assuming everything else works except the roof lock(s), the control module may not be getting the right inputs for locking. The convertible top operation switch could be defective or the top open/closed position switches could be defective or the linkage flap position sensors could be defective and finally, there could be a mechanical problem
Open the pump bypass valve for the top to manually open/close top. Bypass valve is located in trunk on left; remove round 2" cover and turn the exposed valve anti-clockwise.
Problem of motor not moving top is likely low on pump oil. Remove cover on left in trunk and refill slowly after removing the fill plug on top of pump. Use 10w30 oil.
In general, without any testing or diagnosis, you could be dealing with any of the following:
* Open relay - Located at the pump unit
* Close relay - Located at the pump unit
* End position micro-switch
* The operating switch itself
* An issue with the pump unit, but I doubt this, due to the intermittent nature. However, do check the hydraulic fluid level.
The windows do not have to be down for the system to run.
The brake pedal must be pressed while operating the switch. There is a switch at the pedal that signals the convertible top system, but if your brake lights are functioning, the brake switch will not be at fault.
The system is pretty simple and some quick electrical tests should locate the faulty item.
The Bentley repair manual for the Z3 has all of the electrical wiring diagrams, for use in the diagnostics. You can purchase this at Bavarian Autosport 800-535-2002.
I have had this problem with my 2005 S4 Cab - sometimes the top will not latch. I have found that this was because the fabric near the rear passenger window was not folding into place over the steel structure. I just back up the top and made sure the fabric unfolded and all was well.
make sure your car is in park and that you have your foot on the break....if you release your foot it will stop. So keep your foot on until it is fully open or fully closed and the passenger seat has returned to where you had it set prior to opening or closing
Do you know where are the two levers on left and right side when open the tailgate? The one you open to raise the soft top from behind? Well, one of them is not close tight enough. Open it up and close it back. There should be small click from the sensor. Sometimes the sensor won't get engaged and it won't allow opening the top, assuming it's open from the other side.
