My 1993 Sidekick 'check engine' light comes on a few miles after I disconnect / reconnect the battery. When shorting the (underhood) diagonistic connector,I can achieve NO code reading AT ALL. The vehicle runs fine. All emission components are in place, I have been told the ECM internal diagnostic (reading) capabilities (circuits) are faulty and inoperative, and in fact, might negating my check engine light. My vehicle is NOT of the series of the notorous leaking condensers. I have had the board out, and it's absolutely pristine. HOW CAN I OBTAIL CODE READINGS? Im 99% certain I'm grounding (conecting) the correct 4 cavity diagonistic cavaties & connectors.

Thanks, Sandpiper. The switch behind the lt. dash speaker to which you allude is not an issue on my vehicle. I (long ago) moved that damn switch to the outside face of the instrument panel so it could be "reset" at will. Not the issue on my problem. Still have the light on, still driving the vehicle. The 30 or more MPG on the highway I receive would seem to indicate no serious problem(s). I continue to be dissappointed at no codes being displayed.

How do you jump the diagonistic connecyor on a 94 sidekick?

Thanks Sandpiper. The switch to which you allude isn't an issue on my vehicle. I (long ago) moved that damn switch (behind the lt. speaker grille) to the outside face of the instrument panel where it could be reached at will. Light still on, codes STILL unavailable. Runs fine, 30+ MPG on the highway. Go figure!

I had the same problem on my 1994 Sidekick. The computer is programed to turn the light at a certain mileage. My came on at 100,000 miles. No codes were ever found in the computer. I researched it and found out about a reset switch that was located on the front left speaker. Hope this helps.

I had a similar experience with a different car and it was something (can't remember) that was unplugged under the car that sent info from the rear wheels to the computer.

Why can't I pass smog check engine light won't come on

The smog check requires a visual inspection of your check engine light. It has to come on for a bulb check at startup to make sure it's working. But, the light must go out after starting the engine(it cannot stay on after the engine starts during a smog check). If the check engine light fails either of these two tests, the vehicle will fail the smog check inspection.
You need to have the cause of your inoperative check engine light diagnosed and repaired.

Engine Check light

Take it to autozone or another place like it and have them read the codes and tell us what they are.

Smog inspection

What engine codes do you have. If there is an emissions problem there should be a check engine light.

CEL P0431 but passed smog emissions in CA - how can I pass emissions if the CAT is damaged? Could it be another issue?

Maybe not your answer, but it is related: Before going to have your car smogged, check your gas cap. Check the condition of the gasket, or o-ring, inside the gas cap. If is already drying out, full of cracks, get a new one. It will not pass the visual inspection. The smog technician, salesman, will try to sell you a new one for $15 when you could get it for $8 at your local auto-parts store. The technician will tell you that if you do not get it right there and then, he will have to fail your car on the visual test and you will have to comeback to have your car re-smogged again.
The cap might still be doing an OK job of sealing the tank, but it won't pass the Visual, especially if the tech wants to sell you a cap. You can tell if the cap is doing its job if you hear a hissing sound whenever you open the gas cap after running the engine fro a while. If it is not providing a good seal, then you might get a check engine light with a code about a failure in the evaporative system.
Just a little thing to check before you go and put yourself at the mercy of the smog tech.
For $15 you could get a locking gas cap, which might be a necessity now with gasoline prices being what they are, now.

My 1999 kia sephia wont pass smog test

You will need to get it scanned and get the codes for the problem. If it failed the test due to emissions I would almost guarantee it will be your oxygen sensor or cat

Engine light alarm, did not pass smog?

dependent upon your state restrictions it needs to be either fixed or taken through a waiver process. in most any state that does smogs anything after 1996 with an engine light on will fail smog because it only comes on to warn you of an emissions related issue.
I would suggest having it diagnosed at the nearest 2G smog certified shop...

How do i turn off the check engine light on my 1994 ford ranger, in order to pass smog?

YOU CANT TURN OFF PCM WHEN IT SPOT A PROBLEM.YOU HAVE TO FIX PROBLEM.BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE WILL STAY ON UNTIL PROBLEM FIX. ITS AGAINST THE LAW TO TAMPER WITH EMISSIONS SYSTEM.BECAUSE OF SMOG AND POLLUTION LAWS..HAVE TRUCK SCAN TO SEE WHAT YOUR PCM CODE IS.COULD BE SOMETHING MINOR.

Bad EGR

Yes you can by-pass the EGR valve. The only problem is that when it comes down to getting it smogged it will not pass. So that should be considered before bypassing the system. If you still want to by-pass the system let me know and I will tell you how to do it. But again it will not pass smog without it working properly
