Question about 1986 Chevrolet Camaro

No reverse or 3rd gear (OD) auto trans

Have an 86 IROC Z with an automatic transmission. The engine is a 90 350. Have had problems with shifter cables (replaced 2 in 1 week, and needs another). Shifted fine yesterday, but not this morning. No reverse and no 3rd gear. Shifts into 2nd at much higher rpm than normal. Shifter cable travels full range. I am a fairly experienced do it your self er so I can handle most repairs. Does this one fit that category or do I need to take it to a shop?

    Was not sure you got my comment on the no reverse or overdrive problem I have. I have checked the cable and the linkage and have a full range of the selector as i go from park to 1st. Have even manually gone through the gears without the cable hooked up. still no reverse. Am told there is a detent cable that is also a part of the system, but no word on that. Thank you for responding.

Check that the throttle cable to the transmission is on it might possibly be that you don't have the cable adjusted correctly

hot and cold engine do this? both?

does jumps mean.
OD kicks in and out.
or jumps to 2n
or jumps to false neutral, (called SLIPS, or FLARE)

this trans is 99.5% mechanical, Hydramatic shifted trans, except OD.
we cant help you if you dont say what it jumped TOO.

make sure the linkage to the shifter is workiing correctly.
check trans ATF levels (dexron III or higher) per the operators
guide.

If you drive it a few days like that ,you will have a $3000 repair bill

instead of a $332.20 Solenoid Trans Pack, I put in my 2004

Any time you have, any trans issues,you stop driving it immediately
You never drive again, until diagnosed and repaired

I used to own a trans repair shop.

You will have to add labor to yours.

Only runs in 1st and 2nd gear and reverse.


This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line
, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Its 2 wheel drive, but the transmission won't shift unless you manuallyl put the gear shifter in low then work your way up to get the gears to change. The gears work fine it just won't change on its on. If...

'94 Protege's auto trans: no overdrive, poor automatic upshifting


Suggestion try to check if the release bearing of the transmission is still ok and check also the transmission oil level and if you need to change the transmission oil.

Shifter physically won't move into reverse position


To isolate the problem as either an internal transmission problem,or external to the transmission,(shifter or cable malfunction),the shifter cables should be disconnected from the transmission.On the transmission are two levers,if you have a 5 speed trans.One is the neutral gate lever,and the other is actual gear shift lever.Manipulating the levers manually,see if the transmission will engage into Reverse gear.If the transmission engages into Reverse gear,then the problem is either in the shifter mechanism itself,or the shift cables.If the transmission will not engage into Reverse gear,then the problem is either an internal problem,or possibly a switch seized up,like the reverse gear indicator switch.At this point,i would have an assistant sit in the car,engine off,and run through all the gear selections with the shifter,while watching and looking for a cable not operating to its full stroke.Take the console apart to access the shifter mechanism and visually inspect the assembly.Disconnect the cables and operate them manually,one at a time,while an assistant watches them underhood.Visually inspect the shifter and it's mechanism for a broken,cracked,or damaged component.At this point,the problem should be identified and repaired as either cable or shifter malfunction.
