Question about 1999 Plymouth Neon

My 1999 plymouth neon turns off

I bought a 1999 plymouth neon less than a month ago. When I bought it I was told that the battery was not working, so I bought a new battery installed it and changed the positive cable of the battery (I asked for it at autozone they gave me the one that the computer said it was for my car). Then it was driving exelent. A week later the engine light came on and I took it in for a diagnostic I was told it was the catalic converter and I had to change it so I serched around and found a mechanic that specialized in this section took my car in and changed the catalic converter. It ran great. Then one night coming home from work my car made a clicking noise and the radio and the lights turned off. So I pulled over and tried turning on the lights again but they did not so I drove home with out lights or radio, about a block away from the my house the car started making a noise like it was strugling to drive and when I parked my car it shut down compleately. The next day I turned it on and it was fine but five minutes later it turned off again. I called a mechanic and was told it might be the alternator, so the alternator was removed and yes it was not holding a charge, I also took in the battery for a check to make sure it was working and it was. So I bought a new alternator and fuses I changed all the fuses, put in a bran new alternator and re-installed the fully charged battery but now my car turns on for less than five minutes and turns back off again to the point of draining the whole battery. I took the alternator back in for a diagnostics and its working. Any sugestions or solutions I can try to see why my car is not turning on or why it wont hold a charge.

We had the same problem and got 2 different alternators ! Gee, found out it was not the alternator AT ALL, but the wire from the alternator TO THE BATTERY was shorting out. Check that on yours, and good luck!

My 200 Plymouth Neon will no longer start. Just bought a new battery, and we don't think it is the starter, but the alternator isn't working. My friend thinks it might be the ground wire, is this possible?

Good Evening, unfortunately with the neon I have run into this before and it's not always the same in each case. First your lead battery cable ends I have seen go bad more than anything. Second items like your starter and your alternator can be tested at your local autozone or advance auto parts stores at no charge that way it is easier for you instead of replacing both of them you will know for sure which is at fault. Try the batter cable ends first and see if that does it. And if you have any other problems please feel free to ask.

My daughters 1999 Plymouth Breeze overheated so I pulled over for a few minutes and turned it of. When I started it back up and pulled onto the highway I heard some cluncks and it died. Pulled back over...

It sounds like the water pump siezed up, which in turn tears up the timing belt. The whining sound is the starter turning the crank, however with the broken belt, it is not turning the cam. This mean the motor has no compression. The bad news is, and I learned this first hand less than a month ago....the motor, if it's the same 2.0 I had worked on, is that motor is what is called an interferance motor. That means that when the belt broke and the crank spun without spinning the crank, the pistons came up and struck the valves which did not close properly bending them, so they would likely have to be replaced as well.

The timing job on that motor itself is not bad, I did one in a neon yesterday in less than 3 hours, it's all a matter of wheather or not the valves need replacing to. Replacing a vavle means tearing the motor all the way down to the head gasket, replcing the damaged vavles and rebuilding it.

Good Luck, feel free to stop back with any other questions.

Replaced battery and battery light is still on. How do you reset the computer in a 1999 Plymouth, neon?

Most cases, the battery light come on when the alternator is bad. Basically, it's not charging the battery.
Best to have the alternator checked out by the auto-parts store. Most places will do this for free.

My Neon was doing the same thing. After hours of trouble shooting it turned out to be my positive battery terminal. It looked good but after replacing I have not had any problems.
