This sounds like bad news. This is how an engine will act when the oil pressure is actually low. The car is doing everything it should be. Fresh oil will help the low oil pressure as will thicker oil. Most likely Crank and Rod bearings are going bad.

SOURCE: Low engine oil pressure on

in order to check the oil pressure, you have to remove the oil sending unit, then screw in the adapter of the oil pressure gage, and then remove the start relay or fuel pump relay from the fuse and relay box, under the hood on the drivers side, and then crank the engine over 3-4 turns, and then record the oil pressure, and then disconnect the oil pressure gage, and then re install the oil sending unit, replace the start relay or fuel pump relay, and then start up the car, and check the oil sending unit , to make sure it is not leaking, if your oil pressure checks out within the specs, then you are fine, if it gives you a low reading, then you could have a bad oil sending unit , or a oil pump going bad on you. i would replace the sending unit first, then see what the gage shows.

SOURCE: no oil pressure on 1997 cadillac catera 3.o

There are very few things that you could look at to solve this problem. One take a look at the drive shaft that drives the pump for damages and excessive wear.Flush your engine to be sure your oil ports are open and be sure that the pick up and supply tubes are inserted tightly into the pump and connecting points.

Sounds to be maybe a oil pan leak, may need replaced, As for the smell you may want to take to muffler shop and get your catalic converter, checked. good luck to you.

Dont have manual and a light came on dashboard looks like oil can but not what is it

If the oil can light goes on, check the level in the crankcase by checking the oil dipstick under the hood. It may be low.

If it is at a full level, then the oil light may indicate low oil pressure. Change the oil and filter to see if the condition improves. If it doesn't, then the oil pump may be bad. One can test the pressure of the oil while the engine is running by putting a gauge on the area where the oil pressure sending unit is, and reading the value to see if it is within specifications.

Good luck on this repair.

Just replaced a 1998 catera engine now have no oil pressure was told i had to "prime the pump" how do i prime the oil pump?

The best way to prime the pump hoping that you havent ran the engine to long without oil pressure
is to remove the oil gauge switch ORoil light switch on the engine and get a connector with the correct thread to screw into the block and fit a hose to it and to a 1/2 ltr oil can pump oil in as hard as poss and then turn engine over IN REVERSE(Backwards) 3 times and then (pumping every time) refitswitch and start it should be ok....

You should be using 10W30 in summer. You may have 5 W still from the winter.

Help me please.....

You must use 10W30 oil in the summer. On really hot days, when you are stopped and in drive, the oil pressure will drop to almost zero (according to the dash gauge).
If this is not happening under the above conditions, you need to place a shop gauge in the oil sensor sender port and test for proper pressure. If it is low (out of spec), you need to ensure the oil sump is not plugged in the crankcase. If it's not plugged, you need to replace the oil pump and fast!

The ABS issue is probably caused by the EBCTM module on the back of the ABS modulator, loose fuse, or bad connection to the module. Affects the cruise and PS as well.
