Question about 1996 GMC Yukon

1 Answer

I have a 96 gmc yukon, the tailgate part will not open

The tailgate is the split style, not the barn door style; when I attempt to open the tailgate the top half (the glass part) will open but the bottom part (the tailgate) will not. Any suggestions? I can tug on the handle but it does nothing.

You more then likely have some linkage that is broke or unhooked. you should be able to access this by removing interior trim panel.should be able to pick up parts at a salvage yard.

I have the same problem. This is a faulty actuator switch according to GMC which controls the tailgate and the hatch window. My 2006 has 90,000 miles on it (I purchased new). Warranty is not an option and cost is estimated @ $600.00 in Arizona. As far as I am concerned, it is safety related issue and should be a recall since there isn't a mechanical way to open the tailgate or window as an escape route in the event of failure.

Rear gate (barn doors)

Climb into the back of your Yukon, using a apholstery tool (looks like a bent screwdriver with a claw on the end) or a putty knife and pry the bottom of the inner door skins off cut a 6 inch gash in the clear plastic to expose the door handle mechonizims. spray brake cleaner on the inner latch to clean, then using penitration oil to unsieze. Grab the long metal rod and work it up and down...the should open. repeat to the other door if it will not open as well. I had to replace my barn door inner latches on second barn door. (the door that opens last) with safari barn door latches. I got them from a wrecking yard cheap. ($15.00) to replace at GM....over $200.00. The wrecking yard told me the latches wouldn't work, but I look at the Safari latches and they were identical. My barn doors work perfectly. Hopefully this helps.
