1996 4Runner Ignition won't turn past 'ACC''

I went out to start my truck this morning and it would only turn to 'ACC'. It's like something is jammed and it won't turn any further. I tried jiggling the steering wheel back and forth, tried jiggling the gear shifter back and forth (it's automatic) and even used the manual override to put it in neutral then ack to park and no luck. Itried using the spare key too with no success in starting it.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

You ignition locked up, take some wd-40 and spray it into the ignition hole, let it sit for 2 mins and do it again, then immediatly stick the key in and start working the ignition back and foirth.....

this will free up what ever is locked up....

Hello Ron, If your car does not crank when you turn the key, it sounds as if you have problems with the ignition switch . Or the actuating rod is disconnected.

Try puffing some powder graphite into the key slot and inserting and removing the key several times. The tumbler pins get dry and jam in the holes and will not move so the graphite is the recommended lubricant for locks. Be careful as it leaves black residue that has to be cleaned with a wet clean rag.

Is the battery dead? Check your battery condition and connections. Check your starter fuse from there. Check the connection to the starter then progress to the ignition side of the concern

How do I remove the ignition lock on my 1998 Mazda Protege? Tumblers are stuck. Key won't go past accessory.

if ou do not have the key, look at the replacement lock there'll be a tab which recesses when the key is turned to acc or on position. It is that tab which prevents you from removing lock cylinder it has to be forced into a recessed position or drilled to where the cylinder can removed. If u do then locate tab turn key to acc or on and push tab to recessed position and remove cylinder.

Key will not turn past acc, will unlock steering wheel but won't turn to start.

Depending on the model car it sounds like the cylinder lock is bad, something broke apart inside the lock but i have seen the ignition switch also break apart, you will need to remove the cylinder and see if its the cylinder or the switch itself, good day.

Have a 1995 bmw 525i and i went to statrt it one morning and the key turned in the ignition but the car would not turn over there was no spring resistance when you turn the key to the start positition

It sounds like the rod which goes from the key cylinder down to the slide switch has come loose. The rod is along the bottom side of the steering column (or insidie it). If you reattach the rod all should work again.
