Question about 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe

Rough running and rough idle

My 2000 5.3L tahoe has been getting harder to start and has been experiencing rough idle and rough running (to the point where not it won't drive). A couple of days ago the service engine light came on. I replaced the TPS a little while ago because it was experiencing a high idle after running for a long time. Since service engine light, I have replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump relay switch. I suspect it may be the fuel pump, but after a little online research, it could be the MAP sensor. To save me a little time searching around the engine compartment, where is the MAP located? I want to disconnect the leads and see if that makes any difference. Thanks for your help.

The tahoe has about 120K miles. Plugs and wires were repalced about a year ago. I think I understated the rough running. Since the service engine light came on a couple of days ago, running has degraded daily and significantly. The Tahoe won't maintain idle. While in park, pressing on throttle will cause the engine to die. Putting it in gear will cause it to die. It will idle for about 1 or 2 minutes and then die. It acts like it isn't getting any gas. Normally, when I turn on ignition, before starting, I can hear the fuel pump spin up and presurize the gas line. Now, I can still hear the pump but it is making a different noise (more of a grind), which is causing me to think it may be the pump. However, there are other posting at other sites describing similar issues to my problem related to the MAP. The posting suggest disconnecting the leads to the MAP. If problems don't go away, then fuel pump is the suspect, if they do go away, then replace MAP. I'm just trying to find the MAP without doing a lot of searching in the engine compartment.

I have the pretty much the same problem. I have a 2000 tahoe with a 5.3L with 92k. I noticed it when I drove my son to school then on my way back it started dieing when I would accelerate. Every time I step on the gas it sounds like it is struggling to iddle. Then it just dies. I then noticed the gas pump not making any noise when I turn the key to start prior to actually firing up the engine. Usually I can hear the gas pump start up before I actually start the engine. My question is, do I have a faulty fuel pump relay or is it something else? Hope someone can please help a single mom with an answer or advise. I just do not want a mechanic to overcharge me for unneccesary maintenance.

    Thanks in advance...

the fuel pumps were a common problem in GM vehicles for a while now and so were the mas airflow sensors, both can be a bit pricey to repair, i would lean towards the fuel pump if you can not hear it with the key turned to the run position.

Doesnt sound at all like an electrical control issue... more like a tune up...
How many miles? If its hard to start its typically due to spark plugs being worn down with age.. that engine has individual coils per cylinder so there are no "cap, rotor or wires" involved... just replace the plugs, they are platinum and they are about 8-9$$ each x8... but that is what you need

hello thanks for choosing fixya.

one of the most common problems on cold start ups in colder weather is the intake gaskets leaking causing the engine to get extra air this will cause a rough running for a minute or two and once starts to warm up it smooths out. this sounds like what you are experiencing. I would have that checked. might also wanna try to clean the throttle plate this gets debris on it and will reduce the airflow rate and cause low idle and the computer tries to compensate for it and can cause a surge at idle but this is usually all the time.

Clicking sound when trying to start and no start (sometimes). I think it sounds like the starter is clicking. it is a lot like when the battery is going dead and does not supply enough power to engage...

Everything you are describing leads me to believe the battery is the culprit. Not enough storage in it after it sets, when it does start the alternator has to work at max to recover from the start making it idle rough, and the fact that it starts good warm tells me that you definitely need a battery. You can confirm this by boosting the truck the next time it starts "just clicking",if it goes with a boost then you will know for sure that the battery is done in.

the egr valve on the intake might have a chunk of carbon stuck in it holding it open and that will give you a rough idle and some black smoke out of the tail pipe, its located to the left rear of the air cleaner,u can get a better look at it once you grt the air cleaner off, once u do that start it and try to push up on the diaphram in the egr with 2 fingers and see if that makes a difference,if it doesnt pull the egr off and see if anything is holding it open, hope this helps

Check engine light is on, motor runs rough, sometimes stalls

Go to Advance or Auto Zone and have them run an obd scan on it and it will pin point why your light is on and could solve your problem. This is often done for free.
