It most likely is a switch, not a relay. It sounds like the mounting bracket is broken, but it could just be loose. Tighten it, replace the part, or fabricate a new holder.

Breaklightes wont work

It is most likely the problem is with the brake light switch above the brake pedal arm. Check for power there with a 12 volt test light. Without the brake pedal pressed one side of the switch will light the test light, when the brake pedal is depressed both sides of the switch connector will be hot. Let me know what you find. You can buy a 12 volt test light at any auto parts store for about $5

BRAKE LIGHTS STAYS ON. the swith isnt the problem.

If the car thinks the brakes are on, then the switch on the brake pedal lever under the dash is bad. But this switch is not the only switch you have. IF your system works like the Ford products I am use to, then another interlock is present to prevent you shifting out of Park without pressing the brakes.

If you are able to shift without your foot on the brake, you are still getting a signal to the second interlock with the trans. This means the brake pedal switch is saying your foot is pressing the pedal. Some cars are in the data base for If you can register your car for free, most will have free wiring diagrams and fusebox layouts.

You may have a relay for brake lights on a Mercedes. Other cars usually do not because it affects reliability. But a stuck brake relay could keep the light circuit on, if equipped.

A better scanner can do brake functions and all you need to do is plug in the tester to the ABS port and see if the abs is identifying a problem. The cheaper scanners do not have this feature.

A remote possibility is that you have a bad Master cylinder and the pedal is not returning to the full upright position.

I hope my solution is helpful.

My 07 rio brake lights wont turn off

Under the dash, between the seat and the brake pedal is a switch. When the brake is released, it presses against the switch to turn off the brake lights. When the switch does not line up with or fails to connect with the pedal, the lights stay on until your battery dies, and it will.

Reach under the dash, check the switch and move it if it does not line up with the pedal. If it does line up but does not touch the pedal, twist the end of it until it does. The lights should go off.

My brake light stays on after I turn off my 02 liberty. I have to pump the brake pedal and ussually works but lately it comes back on later draining my battery. I've used bungies to hold up the brake pedal...

The brake light switch is sticking look under the dash follow the brake pedal arm up and look for the switch you may be able to get away with spraying some electrical contact cleaner on the switch working the pedal down and up as you spray if this fails to work the switch should be replaced. Remove the plug and wire connection and the screws and adjustment nut that hold the switch in and make note of where the switch was located in relation to the brake pedal contact point, you must have the switch location adjusted in the right point of contact with the pedal for the new one to work right, when installing the new one keep adjusting its location until the desired effect is attained.

Transmission wont shift out of park

Try checking the brake light sending unit. Are your brake lights even working. Many newer vehincles will not shift out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed. However, a faulty sendind unit located on the pedal itself can keep you from moving anywhere. Just check to see if your brake lights are working to know if the sending unit is working.

Jaguar x type brake lights stay on

the brake light switch has either moved out of the bracket just above the brake light pedal or the brake light switch itself is faulty.
look just above the brake pedal, there should be a switch on a bracket so that when you press the brake pedal the spring plunger piece of the switch moves out and the lights come on. make sure the plunger goes in when the brake pedal goes back to normal position.if the lights stay on when the plunger is pushed in the switch is faulty and needs changing, quite common. hope this helps

there is a button on your brake pedal lever that while braking gets depressed, and turns on your brake lights. Now this component is a plastic piece that can get knocked loose rather simply. You either need to re-secure this component, or replace it

(you can get this part at any junk yard for nothing more than some pocket change)
