Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Will crank, very slowly, but won't start

My 1996 Jeep Cherokee will not start. It will crank, very slowly, but not start up. I noticed yesterday that it was slow starting.

I already replaced the starter 14 months ago. Last weekend, I thought I noticed a burning rubber type smell.

I'm a single mom, have no money to fix it and am hoping it is something simple.

Thanks,
Mona from Fredericksburg, Virginia

Hi, I think this suggestion is helpful. I am female, but certainly no dummy when it comes to cars. I have a 1979 Trans Am that I had put points, plugs, plug wires, distributor and rotor in myself. Unfortunately, when it comes to these newer vehicles, I have no clue. I honestly hate all the computerized **** on them. I will look at the battery first and I know what corrosion looks like on battery terminals. The thought of the battery or alternator did cross my mind. But like I said, with these vehicles with computerized stuff on them, it makes it harder to figure out what is wrong. Especially when you have no money to have it put on a diagnostic machine.

Thanks for the info and suggestion. I will certainly try this first and hope the battery is the issue. That would certainly take a load of stress off of me. Thank You!

Hi. Okay, now I'm not sure if the Battery is the problem. I went back outside and tried to start it. I pumped the gas a couple of times and it started but then shut off. So I pumped the gas several times again and it started and ran. I just went back out there about 15 minutes ago. It won't start without pumping the gas. So, I pumped the gas and it started, but then it shut off again. Could it possibly be a clogged fuel filter? A couple of times, it has started running rough and so I put fuel injector cleaner in it, which seemed to help a bit.

Hey Mona, 1st thing u should check is the battery. Most auto parts stores offer a free check of your battery and your charging system. This will tell if the battery is bad, or if the system (alternator) isn't charging the battery. Yes, it could be a starter problem, but since yours is only 14 months old, it should be ok. Let me know what they say, I'll help some more if u need it. Also, how do the battery terminals look (where the cables clamp on to the battery)? Is there corrosion build up (powdery deposits) on the cables and battery terminals (where the cables clamp on the battery?) If there is, u may just have to remove the cables, clean them up w/ sandpaper, coat w/grease or vaseline to prevent future corrosion. It could be as simple as that to fix, so check this 1st.

mona, does it seem to crank over slow still, or do u think it's cranking about normal speed? A new fuel filter would be ok to do, u shouldn't have to pump the gas pedal to start the jeep. Have u been having any problems with starting and stalling before this? It's possible your intake manifold is plugged up w/ goop. This can build up over time, and gradually affect the starting and performance of the car. I just bought a can of CRC intake manifold cleaner to use on a Grand Am, it helped it noticeably, more power, better starting, less stalling when cold. To use it, spray in the intake between air filter and engine, while car is running. You will need to hold the throttle cable open enough that the car won't stall while you do this. I used about 2/3 of the can. I know it's available at NAPA stores, that's where I got it. Keep me posted.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Sport it just won't start. It cranks, that's it. It was running fine yesterday.

If it was running yesterday and only cranks this morning you need to determine which you are missing - spark or fuel. The spark is easy - pull a plug and let it spark to the frame. while cranking. If you have spark then you have to start checking the fuel system.

1996 jeep cherokee country i have fuel and spark engine turns over but still will not start.at one point i crank it for the longest time it started i warm it up then the next day it did the same thing...

When the jeep is cold, turn the key to the on position, without cranking the engine, to see if the check engine light is lit up, on the dashboard. If it is not lit up then the ecu is going bad, slowly dying. If no check engine light is on, leave the ignition turned to the on position for a while(may take up to 30 mins) and the check engine light should then come on and the jeep should start. If this turns out to be the problem with your jeep, then your ecu is in need of repair.

Might be your jeep's ecu is bad. Does the check engine light come on your dash, when you turn the ignition key to on, before cranking? If not, the ecu is bad. If the check engine light does come on, it may be the crank sensor is bad on your jeep.
