Fan runs after car shut off

After shutting my 2002 pontiac sunfire off, it sounds like it is still running. I imagine this is the fan. How do I know, and more importantly what is the cause and what do I do? The fan has been running for 20+ mins.

You may need to replace your thermostat. This is normal for the fan to run after you turn your car off but if you say its running for 20 minutes or longer, it may mean your thermostat is stuck and causing the fan to run longer to cool off the radiator. Its a good thing for the fan to run. Heat is your enemy. I rather the fan run than no fan at all, if your car overheats, you could blow a gasket or warp your valves and its really pricey if that happens

I have a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and when ever the thermostat gets above 195 or when the arrow is pointing towards the middle, when I shut off my car the fan kicks in to cool the car off so that it doesnt over heat. It's a good thing that our cars do that so that it wont over heat. Would you rather for your car to overheat and stall or over heat and then cool it's self off? I'll take door #2 palady1120 lol!!! I found this out when I was waiting to get into a club and the bouncer made an annoucement, "Somebodies car is running in the parking lol"!!! Don't worry, up to date Caddillacs do it tooo.

I have a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire. My fan stopped producing air (hot and cold altogether) - from the lowest setting to highest setting does not work.

sounds like a the heater/ blower fan relay went bad. Unless you're mechanically-inclined you'll need a mechanic to install the replacement.

Do a Google search for the relay or blower motor and/or search for a Chevy Cavalier (same car) forum to find a fix - if you want to tackle it yourself.

I have seen these cars have a lot of problems with the cooling fans. even though they may work, they may not be spinning fast enough. the other problem is the collant temp sensor. make sure you are burping all the air out of the vehicle before toghtening radiator cap or resevior cap

2002 pontaic sunfire problem

Do you hear a high pitched sound when it turns over? Could be the timing belt. It may have broken or stripped out and caused the camshaft to stop opening the valves which completely immobilizes any car. If you could leave more information about sounds and how it was running before this happened I could give you more information.
And don't forget! Please leave four thumbs up. I always try my best at explaining my answer to your problem. And for your safety, here is a complete list of recalls on your vehicle. If your vehicle is affected by one or more of these recalls, then you may qualify for a free repair!

My 1998 pontiac sunfire is getting hot but not overheating

the fan may be bad but you can find the hot side of the plug and run a hot to the battery and see if the fan comes on. if it doesent you know you have a bad fan if it does you can run a wire to the fuse panel so that it comes on when the car does and shuts off when you shut the car off
