I just had new shocks, front brakes and ti rods installed on my audi. now, when i drive, i hear a noise in the drivers side front end. mechanic tells me its the steering box and wants big money to fix it? i'm wondering if it isn't something else - or, why didn't they know that when they were replacing everything else under the sun....

I am going to say 'blown turbo'. As I understand it, they needs replacing every few years. They are susceptible to heat and incredible revolutions. They have to be lubricated, the seals go, and you get smoke.
Faulty power steering rack and pinion or low on power steering fluid causing the whining noise.Tire wear on the outside is usally worn out tie rod ends or front end. out of alinement.As for the ABS and trac light you will need to have the computer scaned.Could be faulty wheel speed sensor.
There are so many possibilities. It's difficult to even attempt a guess.but... Axles, ball joints, brake calipers, rotors, sway bar ends/bushings, rack and pinion,tie rod ends, A-arms, shocks, struts, springs, mounts and even a cracked or broken frame! Hope this was helpful!
YOU DONT HAVE TO REMOVE FRONT END.JUST TO REMOVE ALTERNATOR YOU HAVE TO REMOVE AIR INTAKE CHANNEL REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE HOSE TO CHARGE AIR COOLER.REMOVE ALTERNATOR WIRING HARNESS.REMOVE A/T AND A/C LINES.DONT DISCONNECT.REMOVE ALTERNATOR BOLTS THEN REMOVE ALTERNATOR.
In the past I had the same problem with new pads!
You must check up if new brake pads electrical wires are OK. Try as follows:
1. Disconnect only new brake pads wires from the vehicle electrical circuit.
2. Extract old brake pads wires from old brake pads.
3. Insulation wear cap from old brake pads wires.
4. Connect old brake pads wires on the vehicle electrical circuit.
5. Switch ignition ON and start engine.
Now the wear light must go off !

Remove the tires, Remove the calaper bolts, (small heads on them 12mm or so) Remove calaper, Pads are setting in a holder. Lube new pads with litheum grease and place in holder. (look at old pads, one or both may have small metel tab on one end) If the new pads have the tab, put that pad where the old pad with the tab was. (ie. tab to the inside) Press pistion in with a 'C' clamp. If it won't go in easly, it may screw in. If the parking brake cable is hooked to the calaper, it probly screws in. Use large pliers to screw in calaper piston. Place calaper over pads and install bolts (lube bolts) Rember to pump brakes befor driving . to get a solid peddle.
