There are two marks one on the cam gear and one on the crank gear. to line these gears up first no#1 cyclinder has to be on commpession stroke, and at top dead center . remove number one spark plug rotate mtr by bumping the starter with key. install commpession gauge hose in number one spark plug hole, when you bump the mtr and that cyclinder is on the compession stroke you will here the air escape from the hose. then rotate the mtr to top dead center by algining the the mark on crank pulley and pointer on the timing cover . cam mark is at 6 a clock postion and the crank mark is at 12 a clock postion. adjust as needed

First get your timeng marks jack car up so can spin the crank with socket and ratchet clockwise to the marks on the cam and the head first so u dont bend a push rod or valve than take the belt off so u can line your crank with the mark on your block. then take #1 spark plug out make sure piston is up by sticking a long skinny screw driver in the spark plug hole do the same to #3 plug hole to make sure its down.if it is up and your marks are lind up put it back to geather. then it should run like the race hourse it is

Back firing is usually an indication of a timing issue

The timing chain is most likely worn & jumped a couple
of teeth or the distributor was installed wrong,if you recently

Put the engine at TDC compression stroke , Thats when the valves are both closed on No 1 cyl and the piston is on its compression stroke .then align all cam and crank marks. set distributor/rotor button on No 1 cylinder (rotor pointing at #1 plug wire) . rotate engine 2 revolutions and recheck all marks. Fire away
