I am curious why you are taking this off but I guess that is the topic of another posting.

Remove the cotter pin, loosen the nut a few turns but don't remove it. Give the gusset that the spindle goes into a couple of good strong shots with a deadblow hammer. It should pop out. If you are using a whimpy claw hammer you are going to have to beat on it a while. The better the hammer the quicker the job will be.

Rack and pinon and tie rod replacement


Tie rods and the Rack and Pinion are all the same battle. Blood, sweat, tears and swearing followed by exhaustion. You will need a ball joint removal tool and a 1/2 inch breaker bar and socket set as well as a big hammer. You can go smaller but probably won't work or you will break it. You will need to replace the ball joints as well. The removal tool looks like a tuning fork and you use it to pry the ball joints out by inserting it and pounding the wedge in until it pops loos. There is a left and a right as well as an upper and lower so make sure you have them marked before starting. Removing the parts is going to be your challenge. Make sure when you replace the tie rods that you have them at exactly the same extension as the old ones. This controls your alignment. I do it myself but you may have to take this in for alignment once you have replaced all the parts.

Yes it is very possible the tie rod adjustment was not completely returned to it's previous position (not perfected by eye) after removing to install new boots; note be sure to ask that inner tie rod seals are ok, otherwise the boot replacement is only a temporary shield for the leak.

Can i replace a tie rod {inner} on a 94 ford mustang , drivers side without taking off rack and pinion. I need to get a roll pin off the inner tie rod and thats the problem it looks pressed in not set...


Real simple, assuming you know how to take the outer tie rods off. You have to take the clip that holds the plastic boot on off, then slide back the plastic boot, and you'll be able to unscrew the whole inner tie rod assembly. The hardest part of the whole process is installing the new ones to the exact settings of the old ones

Look behind front wheel for rod that attaches to spindle/knuckle, and moves your wheel back & forth from steering rack. The tie rod (outer) is the piece attached on the end, that is threaded on that rod, and attaches to the spindle/knuckle, behind the wheel. Grab your tire and try to wiggle it hard from side to side. (hands at 3 & 9 o'clock ) Push with one hand while pulling with the other. If there is slop, or play, you have probably got a bad tie rod end, which you can observe it move by looking at where it attaches, while someone else wiggles it. How do i change inner tie rod , do i need a special tool.


i think steering gear has to be removed to get rubber bellows off to access tie rod.

Disassembly
  1. NOTE: Drill out mounting holes in holding fixture with a 9/16 inch drill to allow the power rack and pinion steering gear assembly mounting bolts to fit.

  1. Remove tie rod ends (3A130).
  1. sve~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Use care not to damage bellows. If bellows are damaged, this will allow contamination into the steering gear and cause leakage.
    Remove four clamps retaining bellows to steering gear housing (3548) and front wheel spindle tie rods (3280). Discard clamps if damaged or excessively corroded.
  1. NOTE: Steering gear does not use rivets or roll pins between the inner front wheel spindle tie rod and rack.

    Remove bellows along with power steering gear rack tube (3K762).
  1. Position power rack and pinion steering gear so that several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear sector shaft (3575) with an adjustable wrench on end teeth only while loosening ball joint nuts.
Assembly
  1. Expose several steering gear teeth and hold steering gear with adjustable wrench.
  1. Tighten each front wheel spindle tie rod separately to 90-110 Nm (67-81 lb-ft).
  1. Thoroughly clean steering gear and steering gear housing bore of any foreign material. Any abrasive material is extremely harmful to high-pressure oil seals.
  1. Apply Steering Gear Grease C3AZ-19578-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M1C87-A to groove in front wheel spindle tie rod where tie rod bellows clamp to front wheel spindle tie rod and uniformly to inner diameter of tie rod bellows before installation. This allows for toe-in adjustment without twisting tie rod bellows.
  1. Install tie rod bellows and power steering gear rack tube. Make sure power steering gear rack tube is positioned as shown.

Rack pinions and bushing installement


pretty decent job ahead first jack up car support with jack stands remove front wheels remove nuts on tie rod ends remove tie rod ends from spindles with tie rod end tool or tap with malet were they sit to loosen them hit the spindle area not the tie rod or tie rod threads then dissconnect power steering lines from steering rack also disconect steering linkage to rack there should be 2 main bolts holding assembly to frame remove them should free rack i know that car may have a unique design were u may have to remove inner tie rod ends first if it has those round bushings that always go bad disconect inner tie rod ends behind engine on top of steering rack then remove rack from wheel well replace those inner tie rod bushings u may be able to leave outer tie rod end connected to spindles and u may be able to get to the sterring rack from behind engine good luck

Hi there.... Tie rod ends are not hard to do at all. Take the tire off, you'll see the tie rod end. Take the nut off the end on the spindle side and lossen the nut at the other end. With a hammer, hit the section that the spindle end is inserted to until it pops out. Then unscrew the tie rod. Make sure you count how many turns it takes to remove the old tie rod end..... screw the new one in the same amount of turns that it took the old one to come off. this way you will have it close to what the old one was at. You will have to get a wheel alignment afterwards in order to have it all set up. Hope this helps you out.

Inner tie rod ends on a 2002 toyota celica


First, you do NOT have to remove the rack to replace the inner tie rod ends. Second, If you want a .pdf regarding the procedure, I'll be glad to send it to you. But, the tie rods just screw off. Whatyou WILL need to do is get a good front-end alignement after you replace the inner tie rod. If not, you will destroy your tires. Alignment is critical to minimize tire wear on Celicas.

How to replace


well jack up one side of car. take off tire. back off stop nut against tie rod. (their are only outter tie rods to replace on your rack and pinon car) remove cotter pin & castle nut. pop tie rod with screw type extraction tool, or pickle fork if you must. once loose you just spin old one off & new one on. if you do not move the wheel it should silp right in. tighten stop nut,castle nut, insert cotter pin. GREASE the joint. put on tire. do the other one the same way. GO GET AN ALIGNMENT! it will definently be off. good luck.
