The oil light stays off untill i the revs reach 2000 rmp

REMOVE AND REINSTALL the red lead from the battery terminal. This will reset the internal codes, if it persist then your in need of oil service, OR, YOUR OIL filter needs to be changed, or oil filter HAS BECOME LOOSE during normal operation and lack of the last repair guy to install it completely!!

Service engine soon light is on , what does this mean?

The Service engine light means you should check all the fluids(anti-freeze, oil) It May also signal problems internal to the engine. Auto Zone will run a free computer check if there is one near you. They usually will help check fluids as well.

The service engine light came on the will not go off even though we disconnected the battery cables and connected them again to reset the computer

Many of the newer model vehicles must have the service engine light cleared with a scan tool. Most auto parts stores will hook up a scan tool and reset the computer at no cost.

I have ust serviced my 2001 volvo s40 and now the

did the sevice light come on before you serviced it? when you "serviced" it I assume you changed the oil and now need the service light reset.
I bought the 1998 S70. it got time to change the oil. Being how I am I changed the oil myself. I had to call dealership about resetting the service light.
they said $29.96.
I said 29.95?!!! how much if YOU would have changed my oil and reset the light?
they said $29.95.
so I learned you need to access the OBDII to reset the light.after service. hope this helps.
