I have a 2004 Buick Rainier and the speedometer gets stuck now. One quick fix was to un-hook the battery and let the cluster re-set itself. I have also replaced the battery and I am getting ready to replace the alternator. Hope this permanently fixes the problem!

My speedometer just went to 150 today and won't go below 80 when the vehicle is sitting still. Found this site while looking for a solution. Looks like there isn't one. /gcm

Unhooked the battery. Problem was not fixed. Tried this several times to no avail. Have ordered new cluster.

Same problem on our 2005. We paid the dealer several times and they never fixed the problem for any legnth of time, though they always charged us. I am afraid this was such a bad experience we will not purchase another GM. Why does GM spend so much on advertising and so little time standing behind its products.

Well, finally broke down and paid to have the instrument cluster replaced. Only good thing is that the warranty was still in effect and it cost about 80% less than I had feared. Small mercies, I guess!

Colorado speedometer reads high according to GPS

Find one of those radar displays that sit on the roadside and tell you how fast you're going. Most likely your GPS is the one that's off, because it has to average and estimate your speed, wheras the vehicle's speedometer should be good from the factory.

Speedometer off

Over the years I have had many complaints of the speedometer being inaccurate, few times has it actually been the case, about 5% I would say. You can have the speeds checked for accuracy by any dealer using a known good vehicle speedometer pace car, done the test dozens of times. Normal speedo accuracy is plus or minus 3 MPH.

Speedometer not registering correct speed.

Has to be calibrated on a rolling road with the correct software ,or you have the wrong size tyres fitted ,they are low profiles making the wheels go round faster in relation to the speedo calibration

I have a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. I left it sitting in the cold for 2 days and when I tried to start it the battery was dead. Took the battery to get recharged and now the car starts, but the speedometer...

Hello Aubrey.

I have seen this happen before. Caused by a voltage surge mostly by hooking up the battery with the key on.

When you get your car up to a speed on the highway that is halfway on your speedometer it will come back around. You may need to get up to 70 or 80 MPH.

Watch you don't get a ticket!

Speedometer does not work correctly all the time. Cold weather seems to make it go hay wire. Never stays stuck when the engine is off but registers 15 to 50 mph faster than actual speed

check and see if the wire on back off speedomter is loose and check your vehicle speed sensor see if working or broke and you also have wheel speed sensors that could be malfunctioning

I looked down and the speedometer in my 05 Trailblazer said I was going 120 mph. When I stopped and put the car into park, the speedometer stuck at 70 mph. I need a simple, cost effective solution. Please...

This is a very common problem with Trailblazers and is caused by a fault speedometer stepper motor - the actual motor that makes your needle move around is wearing out.

You have two solutions, if your Trailblazer has 70k miles or less you can take it to your local Chevy dealer and they will replace it for you as part of a recall.

If you have over 70k miles visit my Trailblazer speedometer page here: http://drspeedometer.com/services-i-offer/trailblazer-speedometer-repair

I specialize in the repair of these units and offer free shipping and a great guarantee on my work.

1997 Geo Metro speedometer and odometer do not work

Let me guess, it goes up to about 30, stays there, and if you go faster (past what would be the halfway point of your speedometer) it starts dropping below 30. It sounds like the type of speedometer that uses two magnetic cores at 90 degrees to each other, and one has gone out.

Troubleshooting and repair should be similar to this: http://www.fieros.de/en/articles/speedo.html
