Have a mechanic check for loose wires going to the transmission. Usually when the OD light blicks it's because there is something wrong with the transmission. Have your transmission fluid checked. If it appears brown, dark, or smells burnt have it and the transmission filter replaced immediately. It may also be that you have a leak in the transmission and need to add transmission fluid so that it's at the right level.

We have a 2000 Ford Expedition that jerks or feels like you hit a hole in the road when it goes into overdrive. If we turn the overdrive off it does not do this. How do we fix it ?

When do you step all the way to the floor on the throttle does it runs good again? If yes, then you have a bad torque converter clutch. This clutch is inside of your torque converter which is placed between the engine and the transmission. You will need to remove the transmission for this kind of work. Even if it is not the torque converter, the problem will be inside of the transmission. It is not going to be an easy fix.

2005 ford ranger 4L 4x4 overdrive does not engage when button on shifter is pushed. I also do not see the light on the cluster on

If you have it in 4 LOW, you would never need overdrive. Overdrive is a road high gear that you would use only in 4 HIGH (or 4H) on your shifter. 4L (or 4 Low) would only be used in a very slow speed hill climb. You would NEVER use 4 Low on the road.

What does O D on my ford ranger dashboard mean ?

O/D off is indicating that your overdrive has been disabled or turned off. if your vehicle is equipped with overdrive and this is happening then it usually means that overdriver is not engaging properly.

if your vehicle is not eqquipped with overdrive and is happening usually will indicate an electrical short

either way you should consider taking to mechanic shop

Transmission-overdrive not working properly

check the transmission fluid first .
overdrive allows the engine to run at lower RPM's , which increases the fuel
economy and also the transmission runs cooler
