Question about 1994 Volvo 850

1993 Volvo 850 fuel issues

I have a 1993 Volvo 850 Glt. I turn the key to get it started and it doesn't fire up. The engine cranks and when it doesn't crank I hear it wind. I've gone under and hit the gas tank with my hand and 3/10 times that is enough to get it started. It's becoming harder and harder. It also Idles fast or slow. Is it a pump issue or pump relay. It starts up right after I turn it off, but if I let it sit for awhile it won't.

Now what if I don't hear the humming from the pump when I turn the key on without cranking it. Is it still the pump? For about a month before it quit...If I turned the key on for radio...I could hear a loud hmmmm. Almost like power antenna going up. Now nothing

It is the fuel pump for sure. If you can hit the tank and get it to run it is the pump. this drain back (hard start after sitting) is a fuel pump issue as well

if you hear a hum under the car then the fuel pump is running, however if it will not start right away it can still be the pump, it could have a fuel drain back condition in which the fuel pumps internal check valve allows the fuel pressure to drain back into the tank instead of retaining it in the fuel rail at the injectors. if you dont hear the pump at all but you did before, it may be the pump or the relay, but looking at your previous symptoms , i would lean strongly to it being the pump. the way to test it is , find the wire harness leading to the pump, in the harness will be several wires. check for voltage on the thicker pink or purple wire while someone cranks the engine. If voltage is there WHILE CRANKING, it is the pump, if voltage is not there it is the relay. The fuel pump can be accessed thru the floor on the back of the car, in the wagon it is below and slightly behind the right rear seat, in the sedan it is under the trunk carpet

How to replace a fuel pump on my 1993 volvo 850 glt

There is a hatch over the Fuel Tank under the carpet. Pull the hatch off, disconnect the wires and hoses and unscrew the locking ring. pull the fuel pump and sending unit out as one piece. Replace the Fuel Pump and replace in reverse order.

1993 Volvo GLT 850 Electrical things won't work

I'd be taking the dash apart looking for burnt wires in a harness, so you will likely have to take the outer cover off some of the bundles. Start tracing back from the plug in for the radio. Hope this helps.

Wont start

First things first. You need to find out if its getting spark and fuel. You can find out if its getting spark by taking any plug wire off and holding it just above the plug.have someone else try to start the car.if you see spark then you have it.for fuel look on the fuel rail.that is located on the top of the motor.its metal. look for something resembling a valve stem on it.push in the schrader valve and have someone turn the key off and on if fuel comes out you have fuel

Code stereo volvo 1993 850 GLT

If you need the security code, you need to call a Volvo dealer and give them the VIN number, provided it is the same stereo the car came with.  Most dealers will do it for free, if you can't find one, call Boston Volvo Village.

Hello,
Have you made sure the rotor is turning in the distributor, as this sound like a cambelt failure.
Sorry to bear bad tidings if this is so.
