Question about 1999 Saturn SL

95 Saturn has a hard time starting

Well my car has a hard time starting, it sometimes start right up, I have to give it a lil a gas sometimes to get it going and try to do a start and run and when it does a large amount of smoke comes out of it. the problem is when it runs no matter even for twenty mins. you put it in drive or reverse it cuts off suddenly, but starts back up. the car also stumbles at times. the bad thing is my car leaves black carbon deposites on the ground and the smoke sometimes smells like gas. it seems like i fix one problem and I get another. Any sugestions? I read a recall on a newwer saturn for the ignition module and it sounds like my car. Could I be possibly in risk of a fdire occuring? how can I fix my no starting problems?

SOURCE: saturn ion,sometimes wont start

The problem is in the ignition - the grease gets thick in the cold and doent turn quite right the first time. everything turns on, but the anti theft system thinks you have the wrong key so shuts off pwer to the starter. it takes 8-10 mintues to reset. That is why it normally starts when you come back later. I have had the same problem and done tons of reseach. Right now my temp solution has been a small heater and an extention cord. I keep it plugged in over night on a medium setting - just enough to keep the inside temp above freezing. I am also researching remote starts because saturn dealership charges $250 to replace the ignition, and a remote start will run about $300. Saturn wont do a recall because they feel it is not a safety hazard. I say that is bull. Good luck!

Start by replacing the air filter and checking the operation of the fuel pressure regulator. Have the stored codes read out of your ECU, either by an auto parts store or a local mechanic, in order to ascertain a starting point for diagnosis.

Where is the canister purge valve located in a 2006 saturn ion?

Debbie, Canister is right above rear axle, hard starting after fill up is usually a bad EVAP purge valve solenoid
Check the attached links, last link shows location of purge valve.

I sounds like you have an electrical problem with the dashboard. It will have to be pulled and checked.

I had the same problem with the gas tank on my 95 mustang. You are going to have to drop the tank. There is a rubber seal where the filler neck goes into the gas tank that has failed and must be replaced. You are losing even more gas than you think. Everytime you make a left turn gas is sloshing out through that bad seal.

Have a 1995 Saturn SL2, at least once or twice when I come to a stop and let my foot off the gas the car will die. But it will start right away. and there are times when I drive it that it does not do it....

Remove and clean the mass air flow sensor with carb cleaner on a q tip (clean the two wires that stretch across the opening. Sensor is in the large air hose between the air filter and the throttle body. Most times this will eliminate that sort of problem, providing the sensor has not failed.
