Question about 1999 Saturn SL
Well my car has a hard time starting, it sometimes start right up, I have to give it a lil a gas sometimes to get it going and try to do a start and run and when it does a large amount of smoke comes out of it. the problem is when it runs no matter even for twenty mins. you put it in drive or reverse it cuts off suddenly, but starts back up. the car also stumbles at times. the bad thing is my car leaves black carbon deposites on the ground and the smoke sometimes smells like gas. it seems like i fix one problem and I get another. Any sugestions? I read a recall on a newwer saturn for the ignition module and it sounds like my car. Could I be possibly in risk of a fdire occuring? how can I fix my no starting problems?
this is caused by burnt starter solenoid contacts, U can either replace the starter solenoid contacts (about $15) or u can replace the entire starter.

SOURCE: saturn ion,sometimes wont start
The problem is in the ignition - the grease gets thick in the cold and doent turn quite right the first time. everything turns on, but the anti theft system thinks you have the wrong key so shuts off pwer to the starter. it takes 8-10 mintues to reset. That is why it normally starts when you come back later. I have had the same problem and done tons of reseach. Right now my temp solution has been a small heater and an extention cord. I keep it plugged in over night on a medium setting - just enough to keep the inside temp above freezing. I am also researching remote starts because saturn dealership charges $250 to replace the ignition, and a remote start will run about $300. Saturn wont do a recall because they feel it is not a safety hazard. I say that is bull. Good luck!
