Truck will turn over but not start

I have a 1983 Chevrolet Tahoe S-10 pickup. I drove it to the store itcranked and ran fine. Got back to the house shut it off as normal. Thenhad to go back out to get my son. The truck wouldn't crank, so Ithought ok it's out of gas. So put $7.00 worth of gas in it and stillwouldn't crank. It turns over but no start. So then it seemed as if thebatterywas draining, so I jumped it off and still no start. Even went as faras to put another Battery(hot) in it, but still the same thing. Turnover, but NO start. It sounds as if the battery is running down all ofthese times. I'm going to check tomorrow to make sure the terminals areok, but I'm thinking if it was the terminals then it wouldn't be tringto turn over. let me know of anything that I can do to get it cranked.I need this vehicle for it is the only one I have.

i got the truck fixed and it shocked me to find out that it was the starter.. I've never known of a starter to act the way this one did, i've always had one do the winding noise.. but it was the starter and it is back to running now.. I guess it wasn't completely bad but bad enough to not start the truck.. thanks for the quick response and i'll be back if i need you guys again... Have a wonderful thanksgiving!!

just giving update on my truck. I appreciate the response I got and so quickly when I asked it. It has taken a while to get back on here but THANKS a bunch. It turns out that the starter was the problem at that time.. Now I have the problem of the floats getting stuck closed, I have to hold them down on occassion to get it cranked, it makes me wonder if it was the starter too begin with or if the float was stuck. little things that make you go hummmmmmmmmmm... thanks

Ok I made sure the terminals was ok and they are. I made sure it was getting fire on the first spark plug and it is. also put gas in the carb and its getting gas.also the plugs are wet at tips. I'm very confused about this. It just keeps turning over and not starting.. so what do you suggest next. i don't think it has jumped time, because it has been cranking and running good up til now.

Hi scorioleo, yes, check that the battery terminals are clean. U can clean them up with a wire brush/sandpaper, coat w/ grease to prevent future corrosion buildup. If the terminals have corrosion on them, it could result in the battery havng trouble turning the engine over. Is the engine turning over too slowly (even w/ new battery) in your opinion? Next to check is spark. Pull off a plug wire, if u have a spare spark plug around, attach it to the wire, place away from moving parts, have someone turn key, check for spark at plug tip. Do this out of the sun, and the spark should be easy to see. If u have good spark, next to check is if fuel is reaching spark plugs. After attempting to start several times (only turn key to start position for about 10 seconds, wait about 10 seconds, try again. This is because it's tough on the starter to just keep turning the engine over w/out start up), after several attempts, pull a spark plug and check tip, it should be wet w/ fuel. If it's dry after trying several times to start, u may need a fuel pump (but 1st I'd replace the fuel filter, if it's plugged up, u can have a no fuel at plugs problem). Check this out, give me the results of checking the above, and let me know what u find, we'll continue from there.

Sorry I missed your post on 11-24, as it was recorded as a solution, when it should have been a comment, so I wasn't notified it was u w/ more info. I almost mentioned the starter, but was waiting for u to check out the other 'stuff'. I had a similar problem w/ my f-250, but it was a noticeable slow crank (as u said, like battery was running down), but it got so bad u couldn't even jump start it. Had it towed home, replaced starter, and WOW! Does it crank over now! Glad yours is back on the road, Happy Thanksgiving! Curt

could be the pickup coil in the distributor they go bad fairly often
pickup coil resistance should be 500 to 1500 ohms between the two leads.also move vac advance plate ohms should not change.there should be infinite ohms [no continuety] between either of the leads and ground

Just a long shot, but, (correct me if I am wrong about this), has the timing chain ever been changed? It is possible that it might have slipped a gear ot two. There could be other problems that has nothing to do with the changing of the Alt. Possible cam problems ? You will have to first check the timing.

83 chevrolet s10 won't crank

The starter selinoid(sp) is either bad,  or the starter is loose and not grounded , one of the wires to the selinoid(sp) is off, or the starter itself is bad. Least likly.

Mass air and throttle position

sounds to me like your having a air leak... my hose on my tahoe had a tiny pin leak in it and it did the same thing... check the small hose that goes from the air filter to the head of the motor... that was where mine was if not, check your o2 censor...
