The sppedometer is controlled by a vehicle speed sensor in the transmission. This is most likely the cause of the speedometer not working. Smoke from the steering column is usually caused by a bad signal/multifunction switch
there might be a fuse for the windows i doubt it there will be one for the radio but the speedometer do you mean the light wont work or the sppedometer itself if its the speedometer itself then it is the speed sensor and the gas guage its the sending unit or if its the light then if all the other lights work and those dont then take the instrument cluster off and replace those bulbs
No I believe the speed ometer cable is broken.Dissconnect sppedometer cable from instrunent cluster, romove cable from back of speedometer &transmission case .romove speedometer from sppedometer cable housing if broken replace with new & make sure you grease cable when installing back in cale housing reconnect to transmission &back of speedometer.keep posting
check speed sensor signal at sensor and at cluster. Jack up drive wheels, Block other wheels, start car, put in drive. Then check both AC signals. The signal at the cluster is on pins 14 and 16. See diagrams below.
ur description is somewhat vague. by "stopping during drive" mean the engine stalls?
oh actually yea replace the crank sensor. i cant quite remember which side it's on. although i'm about 80% sure its on the front side. the side closest to the front of the vehicle. this is a very very common problem on the 2.0 liter engines. when the engine is cold the sensor works good and it will run until it gets hot and then the sensor will fail and the engine will stall. this sounds like your exact problem. i used to work at a vw dealer you can trust this diag.
i can answer part of your question. the front wheel speed sensors are for abs and trac control only. these will not affect the speedo your problem is some where else. sorry i have not had this prob yet good luck. you could have to replace the rear wheel speed sensor again. they are not that good. and after market are even worse.
you can try to replace a small plastic piece bought from the vw dealership for about 35 dollars--it controls all the gear changes and is located under the air filter on the driver side of the vehicle--it slips through another piece and often breaks because it is plastic
