Question about 2002 Lexus SC 430

1 Answer

Car feels like it's misfiring or stutters

I just brought a used sc 430 and I noticed as I drive it, it seems to stutters or ****. It dont do it all the time. Does it for a while like a day then goes away and drives perfect for a few days. I took it back to the dealer and they said nothing happen when they had their computer hooked up. Of course 3 days after that it started again. You can feel it at low speeds and at 70 mph. The dealers mechanic said the sensor that connect the gas pedal and the carb might be going bad. he said there isnt a cable from the pedal to the carb like most cars. Anyway its driving me crazy and I would like to have some idea before I take it to the Lexus dealer.

yes when I brought the car the light was on. I took it back and the mechanic turned it off so I think he fixed it. The best was to explain what I feel is like the rpms drop for a sec but the meter do not move. When you first press the gas it stutter like the rpm drops for a sec. You can also feel it at high speeds doing the same when it starts. If I press the gas real slow when I first start, that seem to help. The problem is that it do not do it for days then it start. feel free to call me at 813-215-3091 cell or 813-672-9112 home Frank

Turning off the CEL does not cure any problem, you have a ignition miss, U will have to have it put on a diagnostic machine to determine the cause of the miss.

Check coil #3 on v6 and #4 on v8. Usually the coil closet to passenger read side of engine. You probably dont feel a misfire, but put the car in drive and firmly hold brakes down. Rev to about 2k or 3k rmps. If it stutters thats your issue.

When i am idling in drive the car starts to stutter and feels like it is going to stall. when driving everything seems ok just when it idles i feel it. any ideas on what this could be and if it's

Usually your pcm, (onboard computer) will pick up anything out of the ordinary and set a check engine light. this will point you in a direction if the code pertains to the idle issue. If no check engine light, then being a ford you may have carbon build up behind your throttlr body butterfly valve/flap. this will cause a rough idle, as well as issues with your egr valve and your idle air control valve. Its really kinda difficult to diagnose over the phone so to speak, especially if you are dealing with a problem that your pcm will not pick up.

Wow! The engine is running like **** with misfire codes? I think that's what you were trying to say. First, stop all the "miricle cures in a can"...fuel injector cleaners, K&N filters and the such. They will only do more harm than good. Next, replace your distributor. Honda igniters are notorious for causing the symptoms (and codes) you are describing and they are only serviced in a complete distributor assembly.

This is what you need to do, change the plug wires, because if there is a bad wire you would definitely experiences sputter or a stutter, so do the plug wires and at the same time do the spark plugs, this should take care of your problem. if not let me know and i will give you the next step

2002 Lexus SC 430 tire question . . . would it be a bad idea to run to Walmart and purchase a set of Goodyear tires for this vehicle assuming a gas conscience type of daily driving? Has anyone tried this?

Assuming you buy the same size tire, or something close (which Walmart can help you with) no its not a bad idea. Walmart is a good place to get a set of tires at. Even better you can get some shopping done while you wait! Thanks for using FixYa!
