2002 X-type Jaguar with 2.6 -- check engine light came on

The check engine light came on 2 days ago. The car seems to occasionally buck when shifting under light to moderate acceleration. The engine light does not flash. The only message being shown is that the cruise control is disabled. However, the cruise control works fine.
Lent the car out, and gas fillup may have been with regular perhaps with water in it. I just put in injector cleaner and a half tank of premium.
Car has 97K on it. Has never done anything like this.
Is this a case of bad gas? or something else.
Will go to autozone and get the codes tomorrow.

My 2002 x-type did the exact same thing on many occasions and had many repeated trips to the dealership. This problem was ultimately cased by cracked hoses in the car's vacuum system (which is used in the cruise control and brakes). Have the dealer check the vacuum lines and the breather hose (mine had completely collapsed). Chances are they are leaking and causing your car to "buck" and the cruise to not work. Don't ignore this as it will affect the functionality of your brakes too over the longer term.

Thanks for the info. Will have the dealer check the vacuum lines.

Definitely do not let them take anything apart, that is a ridiculous idea.
The error code should tell them almost exactly what is wrong.
However, again, this could be a similar problem a lot of cars with variable valve timing are getting which is a failing intake cam sensor. This DOES NOT require pulling the engine apart and is VERY EASY and CHEAP to replace. A $30 sensor does not require an engine teardown.

Check and make sure you used the right type of lube. The reason I say this is a feww years ago i put 90weight in one of mine and it would not shift they are several types of gear lube used nowdays some gear boxes like like automatic tany fluid. Just something to check.
