My tach quit a couple of months ago but I could live without it. Last week, the speedometer and cruise control quit. Took it to the shop today and was told that I needed a $500 new instrument cluster. Wonder why General Motors is in financial trouble.

This is a pretty common issue for Trailblazers to have. Here's a link with more information about these GM gauge problems. And where you can purchase replacement parts on Amazon if you'd like to do it yourself. How To Repair My Instrument Cluster

You need a new stepper motor.  Do not waste your money on a 500-600 gauge cluster.  Each needle is connected to a little motor in the panel.  Do an eBay search, and you can get a replacement for about $10.  Fixed mine for good.

Is there a fuse for the tachometer?

Most vehicles power the tach from the same circuit as the other instruments. So if the speedo and fuel gauge work the tach probably has power. May not have a ground signal from the engine computer.

Roaring in the front end of my 2004 Chevy Trailblazer 4x4

A jet engine type of noise from the engine area usually means the fan clutch is going bad. I don't think the tach is related to this, that could be the stepper motor for the tach going bad.

Tachometer stopped working completely but all other gauges are fine. Tachometer would work off and on for a few days before completely not working. "Check engine light" stays on. All fuses are fine. This...

It's very UNLIKELY the jumpstart had anything to do with it, unless you accidentally connected the battery in 'reverse polarity', which causes the electrical system voltages to 'DROP' instantaneously to near zero volts and create 'current spiking' in all active circuits. Nevertheless, the microcomp in the instrument cluster which drives the TACH has protective curcuits. The only solutions are to eliminate any problems in the wiring between the ECM/PCM and the instrument cluster, and bench test the tach to determine if it's working properly. Process of elimination - if wiring is ok and the Tach is ok, then the problem is in the ECM/PCM.

Tachometer is all the way over past 7000 RPM

this is caused by a failure of the little circuit board that moves the tach needle, u can have this repaired by any GM authorized repair center,( this is not at the dealer) ask the dealer for a name and number, they are also availiable on the internet.
