Had the alt replaced on my 98 etc in march. Last month the battery not charging light came on and the car died. Bad alt or more serious problem

If you have access to a multimeter start the car put the meter on range 20v dc or if it's an auto range meter just put it on DC and while the car is running put the meter at the battery pos to pos and neg to neg . it should read between 14 - 14.5 v if it's not the alternator is not charging the battery. If it reads OVER 14.5 It is cooking your battery. I have 2 Cadillacs myself and the rebuilt alternators you get are horrible i replace 2 a year cause the rebuilds are crappy. I used to rebuild them myself but the kits are no longer available.

Can u check your alternater by disconnecting battery while car is running

maybe if your car is from the sixties. most cars if the charging circuit is working the battery symbol on the dash panel will go out once you start it.
a volt meter hooked to the battery terminals should read 13.6 -14.2 volts if it is working properly (alternator) higher readings indicate the voltage regulator is no good or lower than 13 v knowing what u are working on will realy help new cars need the battery to run the computor disconect and car will die

My abs light and my battery light is on. new battery ran down in less than an hour.

check for voltage from the alternator, charge the battery ,, with a multi meter set to DC volts ,, check voltage, you should have a reading just a little over 12v dc, then start the car,, check again, you should get a reading between 13.5 volts to 14.5 volts , if you have that your alt is good,, if not Its not charging the battery as your driving, having a low battery makes the computer go crazy and it looks for anything wrong,, Ive had dash lights for everything light up ,

The battery and altenator are both new and tested good but the battery will not charge all wires are hooked up and seem to be in good condition

Hello! If you have a voltmeter, set it to read 12 volts...With engine off read across the battery terminals...Record the reading...Start the engine...Take the same reading...Voltage must be at least 1.8 volts higher...If not, The alternator isn't providing a charge...Next, turn off engine...Set meter to its lowest scale...Connect + probe to + battery post...Connect - probe to the + (Black/Gray or Black wire) battery lead on the alternator...Start the engine...Turn on heater fan and headlights...Meter must read less then .03 volts...Move the + meter probe to the - battery post...The - probe to bare metal on the engine block...Must read less then .06 volts...If either reading is above the given limits the problem is resistive/corroded battery cables which are dropping voltage...Remove and replace cables... Clean battery post and make sure the other ends are on bare metal...Guru...Saailer

I have a 1976 eldorado that when you disconnect the battery when running the car stalls out I replaced the alternator and battery and after a couple of days the battery died the alternator did not keep the...

A 76, huh, let's see, I don't know if that had the regulator in there or not. It sounds like the alt died, but maybe not. It won't run without the alt. And will only last about 20 mins on a full battery. I would take the alt off and get it back to the store to have it checked. That would be the quickest way to tell, just because it is new doesn't mean it is good. Don't keep on killing the battery, it can only handle so many drains. Hope this helps.

When the Jeep was new the volt meter read 14 volts....now the volt meter reads 13 volts with a one year old battery. Since the battery is a 12 volt battery should there be any concern that the volt meter...

It needs to be looked at,hook a volt meter to the battery, and start the engine, turn the ac on high blower, and the head lights on,the alternator should be putting out 13.65 volts to 14.25 volts,if it is any lower than this, replace the alternator, now,if the reading is not the same as in the vehicles volt meter, then the cables, positive and negative need to be replaced, the cables get old,and corrode on the inside and break down, they do not carry the current as they should.Shuold you decide to replace them,go with a larger diameter cable, both positive, and negative.

Dash says battery not charging

Alternator is what charges the battery. The alternator isn't putting out enough of amps to charge your battery and you will get a light or gauge reading that the voltage is low.

I replaced 2 alternators in my 2000 catera...only when it rains does the car not start..the battery is dead as a door nail...can someone help?

Make sure the car is not draining the battery while parked and shut off.
Place a meter across the battery, it should read 12 volts when charged up.
Start the car and it should climb to and read 14 to 14.5 volts. If it doesn't, then the alternator is bad.
