Question about 1996 Volvo 850

Car wont drive or roll backwards.

I was driving out of my driveway today when my car started seizing.  I checked the oil and noticed it was low, so i added 1 qt. of 10w30 and it seemed fine at first.  Once I got into town, the car started seizing again, so i pulled over and walked to the gas station to get another qt of oil.  After adding it, the car wouldn't drive in reverse, so I called a truck to tow it, and when we attempted to push it backwards out of the parking spot, the car wouldn't budge!  Any suggestions?

The car does drive forward.  I jacked up the car on the front passenger side, and was able to roll the wheel forward with my hands, but the wheel would not roll backwards.  Is that a brake problem?  Should I check the rest of the wheels?

What you need to find out is what is not turning you need to check each tire to find out if its a wheel brg on a wheel. or a brake problem or if the problem is in the transmisssion so you will need to jack up each wheel to find what kind of problem we are looking at.

just post back with what you find and dont rate this solution untill we finish other wise you wont be able to see my further posts
posts you dont think are of any help just mark them thanks for trying unless they are realy bad then you could rate them IA

Check your parking brake cables, seized or stuck. Have you been using park brake ? When you back up is the most likely time for rear brakes to adjust themselves too tight. Backing up & stopping fast, will cause them to tighten up, and if your only occassionally using your parking brake, that might have contributed. Try putting park brake on & release it 2 or 3 times & see if it helps at all. Either way I think you'd be wise to have brakes checked, especially rears. Seized calipers are pretty common too. Don't push your luck, have brakes checked before driving otherwise you could do more harm, as well as put yourself & others in a dangerous situation.

Honestly, it sounds like your motor has seized. Will the car even start or for forward? If not, it sounds like what has happened was when you pulled into the gas station to get your oil, I;m guessing you shut the car off to go inside to make your purchase. It's possible that the temperature got hot enough that when it began to cool down, your pistons seized from the expansion of the heat. Once again, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is very likely what has happened. I hope this info proves helpful. Have yourself a nice night!

Sounds like your transmission has siezed up and not your engine
you are going to have to get your trans rebuilt or get another one if its cheaper than getting yours rebuilt

I need to know will it roll forward. if yes i would have the rear brakes checked or jack the car up one tire at a time in nuetral if all the tires roll free the problem is most likley in the transmission hope not. good luck

If the smoke coming out (the back of the car exhaust) is dark grey...then you have a oil burning problem..this will cause your oil to be low sometimes quickly...if it is leaking out, sometimes oil leaks out on to exhaust under the hood, and can burn making smoke under the hood.. If the smoke is more white, then you have a head gasket problem. If you need to jump start your car, maybe you should drive to a national chain of auto parts store...they test batteries free...and test alternators free too...If you ran too low on oil, you might have a serious engine problem like a seized or nearly seized bearing, worn rings, or nearly seized motor.

WHAT IF YOUR CAR STARTS ROLLING IN GEAR

Please be more specific. Most cars with automatic transmissions will roll forward in Drive or backwards in Reverse. If the car is on a slope, it can roll due to gravity, even backwards in a forward gear. If you mean the car is rolling when it's in Park, either the transmission is faulty or it's not fully engaging in Park. A third possibility is that you mean that, after stopping with the brakes, the car begins to roll with your foot still on the brake. That would be a brake problem. If you've had the car for a while and this is a noticeable change, take it to a mechanic and have it checked. Explain your concerns clearly.

Ok I have a 2005 tribute and I always run

This car has a catalytic converter, you can't see the smoke of the burned oil with it, it's cleaned. The oil could get in the plugs cavity only if there's a leak at the valve cover. My guess is that the oil seeps out only when there's pressure - the engine is running. To find where it leaks clean your engine thoroughly the start the engine in your driveway for an hour - where the oil will leak you clearly see it. In that case replace the corresponding seal.

My engine wont turn over

UH, ya you probably should have attended to that oil light and not continued to drive. And then you tried to start your car again? yeah the thing is seized up and its totaled. You need a new engine or a new car.
