When I try to crank it starts for about 2 seconds then shuts off. Thought it was something with the security system so I disconnected the after market system. Then tryied the factory security system. Tried to start with a key that didnt have the chip (the plain key I use when I lock keys in car) theft system worked fine" theft" light started flashing and shut down. So I have the same symptons but no theft light flashing. When I was tring to crank it the 1st time this happened, I accidentally tried to crank it twice making the starter engage while it was almost started. At witch time it shut down and have not been able to crank since. HELP!!! Thanks Randall

Re: 1997 ford expedition wont stay running?
You will have to use testlight/probe to make sure you are getting power to the solenoid while cranking and wether it stops or continues to give power when starter stops. If you have power at the solenoid wheen it stops replace solenoid or complete starter. If no power you will have to find the starter relay and switch with headlight relay to see if that corrects problem. If doing relay swap dont swap fuel and starter relay with each other. You will also have to test wether you have power at the relay holder Terminal 30 on the relay is power 85 is earth 86 is switch and 87 is output. If no power at the relay holder you will have to check ignition barrel and wether the power in and power out is correctly working.A very easy test for the starter is to run a wire from the positive side of the battery directly to the starter solenoid terminal and see if the starter cranks as long as you leave the wire on it.If you leave the ignition on vehicle should start and if it fails to start you have other issues.Good luck let me know how you go

OK, when you turn the key to on, it will start the pump for about 2 seconds-this is just to put pressure in the lines and in the fuel rail for easy starting. If key is not turned to start, pump will shut off after 2 seconds. But when cranking in start, and when engine is running, the pump is on full time.
If your pump runs longer than 2 seconds with key only in on position, you have a fuel circuit problem. It very well could be a bad fuel pump relay staying on. Or it could be a computer problem signaling the relay to stay on longer. Try a new fuel pump relay first and see if that was the problem.
try disconnecting the battery negative with the key in the run position..this kills the computer..then shut the key off and reconnect the negative cable, turn the key to run position and listen for the fuel pump to come on 2-3 seconds try to start..repeat this 2-3 times if still an issue.. repost findings
Securilock problem for your remote start? Check when you try to start it, if the security light is flashing fast it is probably the PATS (security system) bypass. To reprogram it you will need two keys. First insert the first one and turn it to the run position. When the security light shuts off insert the second key and turn it to run. Once the light has gone off the second time pull the key out and hit the start button on the remote start fob, this all has to be done in 10 seconds. The vehicle will start, shut it off and try it again. If it doesn't start look to see if the security light is flashing fast again if it is the bypass needs to be replaced. If the light isn't flashing fast and it still doesn't start it should be honking at you or flashing its lights, count these then look in your manual it will tell you what is wrong. If none of these work let me know and I will help you. You can also check out my profile I have a tip that is about remote starts.
the expeditions are know for having injectors stick open and will flood the cylinder causing hydolock, when it does this again remove the spark plugs and have someone roll the engine over, if fuel comes out of one of the cylinders then that cylinders injector is at fault. the motor will turn over after it sits because all the fuel will eventually run past the piston rings.
first of all its not good to spray starting fluid into the intake, its got a plastic "LOWER"intake and it can blow apart and **** too much air through it.Next reset the computer and it can be done by un-hooking the battery cable for a few minutes and if this works and runs for a while and does this again, then reset the computer again. If it does it again then maybe replace the computer..Then also check the fuel pump,it may sound like its working but it could have gotten hot and the plastic gear on the end may not be pushing fuel through when it runs for a while.
On the engine there is a tube that supplies fuel to the fuel injectors, on that tube there is a valve, like a metal tire valve, this is the fuel pressure test port, you will need a special guage to check the pressure that screws onto that valve, Kragen and other parts stores sell this test kit, it is very inexpensive, about $20.00, but cheaper than having a shop do it for you, if you do the test and you have no pressure while cranking the engine then your fuel pump is bad, the pump is in the gas tank, a big job and dangerous due to chance of fire if you are not cautious.
