Question about 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser

Loud intermittent vibration in 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser

The vibration starts after a period of warmup (usually a few miles) and the original noise started after driving for 1 1/2 hours, parked 2 hours, driving additional 1 1/2 hours. Sounds like "wharfwharfwharf" then gets progressively louder unless you let off the accelerator. The rpm's are between 2000-2500 and do not change when the noise occurs. Shop changed the bearings in the wheel thinking that was the problem because the were heavily worn. Noise started back just after I picked it up from shop. You can feel the vibration under your feet and it sounds as if its coming from the middle back of the engine near the gear box but the gear shift doesn't vibrate. Using OD does not change noise or frequency of occurance. Noise does change when brakes are applied either slowing the noise or stopping it all together. Tightened all belts and found a little play in right front wheel as compared to a tight (no play) left front wheel. This LC is an AWD with good tires and plenty of tread left. 181000 miles with all scheduled maintainence. Knuckles were replaced by dealership for the former owner. Small oil leak from bad seal. No other noticeable leakage from the engine. I am totally stumped by this one!!!

I had an intermittent grinding noise that was extremely loud from the front axle on my 1996 LC that propagated vibrations and shaking throughout the car. The noise was indexed to road speed and it appeared to me that something was occasionally breaking loose under certain conditions. Drivabilty surprisingly remained good while the noise was going on.

The dealership has just taken off the knuckle from my axle and the brass inner bushing on the driveshaft, which should be captive was loose. That would fit with my diagnosis. They are ordering the part and hopefully that will fix the problem. Cost $850 including bushing and seals.

I have the exact same problem with My Toyota 4Runner. I think it is getting progressively louder, but cant be sure. I thtought it might be wheel bearings, but now after reading the post above, doesn't sound like it is it. Anyone have any ideas with this one.

I have a 2005 land cruiser. It has a slow acceleration and begins to vibrate from underneath as the acceleration increases. Can you advise please? Thanks

do you hear a loud hissing sound when you take off?
Could be the cat converter.

if not that, I've seen CV axles that caused poor take off and vibration.

let me know what you find.

When i start the engine i have like a white smoke behind me is just huge.i drive a toyota land cruiser 2006 manual gearbox.i don t know what is the problem?is happen in every morning and 4 max 10 sec all...

smoke indicates a weak engine, if it is only at start or beginning few minutes of driving then hopefully it is rings only which is weakened and needs replacement, as per your note it seems only at start and the vibration is it only at cold start and what about if after running a more then 5 miles even you stop the car and start in few second does it still vibrate or no, please let me know

2007 Land Cruiser stalls to idle and non responsive to gas pedal

Had exact same problem after driving 120 miles in Florida heat. After 30 minutes started but ran rough for a day and now seem fine. Thought at first fuel filter or dirty gas. Going to replace filter anyway. Is this a common problem?

Ignition wont switch off

I had same problem a few years back - turned out it was a bad starter. What was happening was that the starter was always powered on - so even if I shut the ignition off it would still run and I had to disconnect the battery.
